HUMAN REMAINS UPDATE:

Good afternoon,

I would like to inform the public since the next of kin has been notified that the human remains found in the Means community on 12/5/24, 02/21/2025 and 02/22/2025 are James “Jimmie” Madison Smallwood of Frenchburg, Kentucky. Smallwood was last seen March 21-22, 2022 in Menifee County. We appreciate the community’s patience as this case was on going. The Menifee County Coroner’s office has worked very close the last year and 4 months with the medical examiner’s office to bring an answer to a family. I ask you to come together as a community and send your thoughts and prayers to the Smallwood family during this time, as they finally have closure but are now processing the loss of their loved one.

We want to thank Menifee County Sheriff Roger Smallwood and his deputies, Kentucky State Police, Kentucky State Police Forensic Lab, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife and the State Medical Examiner’s office on their partnership with this case.

As always if you have any questions please reach out to me.

As the snow has started falling again roads throughout the county are snow covered and becoming hazardous. If you are or will be traveling allow yourself extra time and drive with caution. State road crews are already out salting and plowing so hopefully the roadways won’t get as bad as they were last week.

SCAM WARNING

I just had a report that one of our citizens has been contacted by a person claiming to be an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation asking for money to settle fines owed to keep her from spending time in jail. DO NOT send money to people making these claims. If you are contacted by this person please let us know and again DO NOT send them money.

Road conditions have improved greatly this morning. Primary state roads are in decent shape for the most part. Secondary state roads and county roads are still iffy. Some are awful, some are passable with caution. There are still areas of ice and frozen slush, especially on secondary and/or gravel roads. Some are still covered in a solid sheet of thick ice. If you are going to be traveling drive slow and take your time. With the extremely cold temperature today it’s suggested you keep extra coats, blankets, etc. in your vehicle in case you have issues and become stranded. Stay warm and stay safe.
