National Hydropower "Day" continues! Today we hear from Ryan Hormel, Mechanic at the Jeff L. Taylor Pine Flat Power Plant.

💡What does working at the Jeff L. Taylor Pine Flat Power Plant mean to you?

Working at the Jeff L. Taylor Power Plant to me means being part of a team that quietly powers everyday life. Knowing that our daily work directly keeps water flowing to homes and businesses and our local community thriving gives me a deep sense of purpose.

💡In your own words, why is hydropower so important?

Hydropower is the backbone of our clean energy transition delivering reliable, round the clock power while serving as the essential baseload that stabilizes and integrates other renewable resources into the grid.

💡What does working at the Jeff L. Taylor Pine Flat Power Plant mean to you?

For 30 years I have maintained equipment at the Power Plant to make sure our operators have an accurate measure of the water we are discharging into the Kings River. This is part of the hands-on work I like and have the opportunity to do here. I am able to see what I am a part of when I see the river and canals with water that has passed through the plant. I strive to maintain a high level of plant readiness to supply accurate water deliveries and electrical power to the Central Valley areas we serve.

💡What does working at the Jeff L. Taylor Pine Flat Power Plant mean to you?

I take great pride in working at the Jeff L. Taylor Pine Flat Power Plant by providing a stable clean energy production without producing greenhouse emissions. The Jeff L. Taylor Pine Flat Power Plant has been producing a reliable source of emissions free renewable energy production for over 40 years.

💡In your own words, why is hydropower so important?

Hydro-electric energy production provides a stable source of energy unlike solar power and wind generation which rely on the sunlight and wind to produce electricity. The water source that produces hydropower can be utilized by several different hydro-plants within the same watershed.

💡What does working at the Jeff L. Taylor Pine Flat Power Plant mean to you?

For me, working at the Pine Flat Power Plant is about protecting the future of our community and our environment. Generating clean and reliable energy is a source of self-satisfaction. I take great pride in knowing that the energy we harvest right here in the Kings River basin is used by CA Department of Water Resources to power the State Water Project.

💡In your own words, why is hydropower so important?

Hydropower provides immediate, reliable energy that takes only minutes to deploy onto the grid. Driven by natural rain and snowfall, this renewable resource serves as a natural fuel source, generating clean electricity day and night. All while producing zero emissions and providing flood control to the surrounding communities.

We have decided to keep National Hydropower Day going all week! Today we are highlighting KRCD General Manager David Merritt's feature from Hydro Leader Magazine last September:

“Hydropower is part of our founding act and has been central to KRCD’s mission since that time. Building off the foresight of the engineers who built Pine Flat Dam, who included penstocks in the design, Jeff Taylor, the general manager during the 1970s, led the charge to develop the 165 MW hydroelectric project. We received our Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) license in 1979, and the facility came online in 1984 under a long-term contract with the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) to serve the State Water Project. The KRCD board of directors later renamed the plant the Jeff L. Taylor Pine Flat Power Plant in his memory.”

Today is National Hydropower Day!

KRCD hosted a tour of the Jeff L. Taylor Pine Flat Power Plant this morning with representatives from the district offices of Senator Alex Padilla, Congressman Tom McClintock, Congressman Vince Fong, Congressman Jim Costa, and Congressman David G. Valadao.

Austin Ewell of Ewell Group (representing KRCD), Lane Dickson of The Ferguson Group (representing KRCD), and members of the KRCD staff and power plant operations team were also in attendance.

Hydropower is part of KRCD's founding act and has been central to the district's mission since that time. For 40+ years the power plant has produced clean energy to power the State Water Project through long-term contracts with the California Department of Water Resources.

💡Ever wonder how hydropower is generated at Pine Flat Dam’s Jeff L. Taylor Pine Flat Power Plant? Since today is National Hydropower Day, we thought we’d use this opportunity to teach you how the Jeff L. Taylor Power Plant produces clean energy!

Coming from the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Kings River fills Pine Flat Reservoir and flows into the hydroelectric turbines through 13.5’ diameter pipes (technically called penstocks) into our power plant. That flowing water puts pressure on the turbines causing them to rotate as it passes through. As a result, a generator connected to the rotating turbine produces electricity!
