State laws that allow librarians and booksellers to be arrested almost always begin as simple book-ban laws.
Arkansas is simply the most recent example.
In fact, 17 states have pursued laws that would criminalize librarianship.
And in one case, a sheriff in Texas pursued the arrest of school librarians for more than two years. Luckily, there were no laws to support his efforts.
We cannot wait until another librarian is sitting across from a police investigator to decide that this has gone too far. We need you in this fight now.
Because this fight is no longer simply about which books are on the shelves.
It is about whether fear of political retaliation and criminal investigation will determine what librarians are willing to put there in the first place.
We know what that looks like.
We've already seen it.
