Happy National Aviation Day ✈️

Today, we’re celebrating the CHP Air Operations team and the pilots, flight officers, mechanics, and support staff who take to the skies to support our mission.

From traffic enforcement to emergency response, our aviation teams play an important role in keeping California’s roadways and communities safe.

Congratulations to Officer Nick Fishbough of the California Highway Patrol’s Office of Air Operations, Fresno Unit, on receiving the Commissioner’s Life Saving Medical Aid Award.

On January 29, 2026, while off duty and playing pickleball in Fresno, California, Officer Fishbough witnessed a man collapse and lose consciousness. He immediately assessed the patient and began performing CPR chest compressions. Another bystander assisted by providing rescue breaths.

Together, they administered CPR for approximately ten minutes until emergency personnel arrived on scene. The patient was later determined to have suffered a heart attack caused by two blocked arteries. He subsequently underwent emergency surgery and is expected to make a full recovery..

Congratulations to (ret) CHP Officer Rusty Hotchkiss, for his receipt of the California EMS Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes individuals whose sustained contributions have significantly advanced emergency medical services over an extended period. As a paramedic and California Highway Patrol Air Operations member, he conducted hundreds of complex rescue missions, including high -risk hoist rescues in extreme environments. His career reflects a lifelong commitment to service, courage, and the protection of others, leaving a lasting legacy on the EMS community…..

This World Pilots Day (April 26), we recognize the incredible pilots of CHP who take to the skies in service of our communities. Their precision, skill, and dedication play a vital role in keeping Californians safe, from critical searches and rescues to supporting officers on the ground.

Behind every mission is a pilot who trains relentlessly, responds without hesitation, and upholds the highest standard of excellence.

Today, we thank our CHP pilots for their professionalism, courage, and commitment to going above and beyond.

As New Year’s celebrations bring increased travel across California, the California Highway Patrol is reminding motorists that safe driving is essential. To help prevent crashes and save lives during this high-traffic period, CHP is implementing a statewide New Year’s Holiday Enforcement Period focused on reducing dangerous driving behaviors. The public is encouraged to report unsafe drivers by calling 9-1-1.

The New Year's HEP begins today, December 31, at 6:01 p.m. and continues until 11:59 p.m. on January 4.

As we welcome the New Year, let’s commit to making smart choices. Buckle up, slow down, stay focused, and if you’re celebrating, always plan for a sober ride.
