✨ Join Us in Taking the Night Back ✨

Tonight, we rise together.
We walk, we speak, and we stand for every survivor, every story, and every community ready to break the silence around sexual assault and violence.

This is more than an event, it’s a movement of unity, healing, and empowerment.
When we show up together, we remind our community that safety, dignity, and respect are non‑negotiable.

Bring your friends, your family, your voice, and your light.
Let’s reclaim our streets, our power, and our night.

Let’s Take the Night Back.
Because when we walk together, we are unstoppable.

Today, my heart aches knowing Karen Sturkie Mitchell is no longer with us.
Her unwavering dedication to the success of the hearing, and her profound advocacy for survivors of r**e and sexual assault, were simply unparalleled. She poured her heart and soul into that work, understanding the unique journey of survivors like no one else.
I'll miss her quirky spirit, which always sparked a spontaneous connection with mine. Karen was a true warrior, and an incredible woman. We've lost someone truly special. ❤️

Our sincere appreciation begins with the survivors, courageous individuals who exemplify true resilience. We also extend special acknowledgement to DA Karen Mitchell for her dedicated efforts, may you rest in peace.
Furthermore, we express our gratitude to every individual who engaged in this critical advocacy: those who submitted letters to the State Board of Parole and signed the accompanying petition. Our thanks are extended to City of Fresno officials, including Council member Annalisa Perea , State Representative Esmeralda Soria District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp, and Mayor Jerry Dyer Senator Anna Caballero The support from our cherished friends, loved ones, and all dedicated victim service Centro La Familia Advocacy Services, Inc., RAINN KMJNOW Cristina Christina Musson providers has been truly impactful.
The recommendation by Commissioner Duff and Deputy Commissioner Lyn for a 7-year denial of parole signifies that his release won't occur at this time. However, this outcome underscores the ongoing necessity of our collective advocacy. We are committed to continuing the fight to amend the youthful offender bill, ensuring his continued incarceration and preventing further instances of this profound injustice. We firmly reject the silence that often accompanies the fear, humiliation, and shame experienced by victims.

Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp, Councilwoman Annalisa Perea, survivor Mirna Garcia, and other community leaders held a press conference on May 15, 2025, to strongly oppose the parole of Rudolph Martin Acosta. Acosta was convicted of being a serial ra**st who terrorized women in Fresno's Tower District in 1991, sexually assaulting at least nine women and receiving a 78-year prison sentence. Despite the severity of his crimes, he is eligible for parole under California's "youthful offender" law because he was 25 at the time. The community leaders are urging the California Board of Parole Hearings to deny his parole and are encouraging the public to submit letters of opposition before the June 6, 2025, hearing.
