Jackson Beach Cannery Update

The Port of Friday Harbor Commission will be continuing its discussion about the desired uses of the Cannery building and lands at its September 11, 2026 meeting. The meeting will be held at the San Juan Island Yacht Club at 10:00 A.M.

The focus of this discussion will be on near-term uses that may be possible within the constraints of the existing zoning and available utilities. The discussion will also include uses in the one-to-five-year period that may require zoning changes but would be possible with the existing utility services.

Longer term uses that would require modifications to the County’s Comprehensive Plan, Waterfront Master Program, or major utility upgrades, will be considered at later meetings.

Pending the Commission’s decision on which near-term uses to pursue, Port staff are focused on the facility’s cleanup, maintenance, and safety.

Tomorrow evening our Music in the Park series kicks off for 2026. Dangerfields will be playing from 6:00 – 9:00pm. The Lions will be providing a beer garden during the show. After the show stick around and watch the fireworks over the Port.

The Port would like to thank everyone who participated and submitted ideas and comments. The Commission will be taking the results from this meeting to refine the future plans for the property. We anticipate additional events as plans develop but comments can be made anytime on the Port's website or in person at any regular commission meeting. https://portfh.org/cannery

We also received wonderful feedback regarding the art proposals. This is anticipated to be a topic during the next commission meeting on the 12th.

The Port of Friday Harbor invites the public to the Mullis Center on June 4th, 5:30p - 7:00p, to participate in an open house to discuss the future of the Jackson Beach Cannery.

This event will also allow for public comments on the proposals that were received in response to the recent RFP for public art on the Marina Office.

The 6th Annual Gathering of the Eagles journey begins on the 16th. The canoes are expected to make a landing at Jackson Beach on the 18th with a community potluck dinner to follow at the Jackson Beach Pavilion.
