Join us tomorrow for a special local author talk with our very own Susan Grout!

In her new book, "Small Town Therapist's Red Hot Tips," she tells some funny stories (and even some poetry) and some of the grief she experienced along the way. Her presentation will feature vignettes of some friends and family you may know, whose identities, of course, will be disguised to protect their privacy. Included are many stories about life then and now. The book gives specific tips on how to create a happier, healthier life.

Today marks end of the school year and the beginning of the Summer Reading Program, and tomorrow it's time to celebrate! Youth entering 6th-12th grade are invited to join us for the Teen Summer Reading Kick Off Party on Friday June 12 from 7-9 PM.

The Teen Library Council decided this is the perfect opportunity to introduce new library tweens and teens to the magic of the Library Lock-In. Get ready for two hours of karaoke, snacks, crafts, games, and full run of the library! Unlike a normal Lock-In, no registration is required to attend this one. Like a normal Lock-In, doors will close to new entries (7:30 PM), so arrive on time and ready to have some fun!

New Creativebug Class!

Creating a “double exposure” effect with marbled papers produces a striking, layered result, and it’s exactly what Austin-based surface designer Mercedez Rex walks you through in this overmarbling technique class. She guides you through layered marbling techniques from the very beginning, starting with selecting your paper and prepping it with alum (the mordant that helps the paint stay in place). From there, experiment with how different registrations shift the final outcome by layering and doubling marbled designs like Suminagashi, Stone, and Gel-git.

Available at no cost through San Juan Island Library. To access, use your library card number and password to create a Creativebug Account. Learn more about the class here: https://login.sjlib.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://www.creativebug.com/r/sjlib/classseries/single/overmarbling-on-paper

Join us next Wednesday for a special free screening of the 2025 documentary "The Librarians" directed by Kim A Snyder!

About the Film:
When lawmakers seek to review a list of books, librarians find themselves on the frontlines of a national battle. Across the U.S., librarians face the impact of uniting against library collection standards that include restrictions on race-related and LGBTQIA+ content. Drawing on historical context, The Librarians explores the broader implications for education and public life.
