We have one more poetry workshop in this series from Island Verse Literary Collective! This Tuesday!

These writing workshops will be a series of sessions focused on craft, style, and recitation/performance, with an emphasis on community engagement. As part of the program, we're seeking the first Poet Laureates of the San Juan Archipelago and we hope these initial writing circles and open mics will help generate interest and participation.

Presented by the Island Verse Literary Collective. Programming supported by Cultural Access San Juans.

New Creativebug Class! Tunisian crochet is one of the least-known yarn crafts but is a fun skill to have in your fiber arts toolkit. Somewhat of a cross between knitting and crocheting, it uses a long crochet hook that allows you to work with multiple live loops at once. Though the technique feels like crochet, many stitches mimic knitting, offering plenty of design freedom. In this class, artist, author, and professor Lisa Solomon teaches the foundations of Tunisian crochet through four essential stitches. You'll create 16 unique stitch-pattern swatches as you build confidence with the technique. The resulting fabric is dense and cozy, making it ideal for blankets, pillows, and warm garments.

Available at no cost through San Juan Island Library. To access, use your library card number and password to create a Creativebug Account. Learn more about the class here: https://login.sjlib.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://www.creativebug.com/r/sjlib/classseries/single/tunisian-crochet-a-daily-practice

Join us next Friday for the next installment of the Friday Harbor Film Fest's Best of the Fest: "Champions of the Golden Valley"!

This award-winning documentary captures the emergence of a homegrown ski culture in Afghanistan's remote, snow-capped mountains. At its center is Alishah Farhang, a former Winter Olympic hopeful whose dream of being Afghanistan's first Olympic alpine skier transforms into a mission to bring skiing to his homeland. Using handmade wooden skis and secondhand gear, young athletes from rival villages unite for a ski mountaineering race unlike any other — a powerful catalyst for hope and unity. When their world is suddenly upended, Alishah and the athletes must draw on the lessons learned on the slopes to find their way forward. Riveting and deeply human, this underdog sports story offers a visually stunning, rarely
seen perspective on Afghanistan, showing how competition can strengthen communities and unite cultures.
