🐾 Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

DID YOU KNOW?

A Bloodhound’s nose is truly something special!

Bloodhounds are often cited as having up to 300 million olfactory receptors, these are the specialized cells that detect odors.

Humans? About 6 million.

That’s one seriously impressive superpower!

But it is not just about having an incredible nose. A Bloodhound’s olfactory system allows them to detect, distinguish, and follow human scent, even through complex environments.

Today, on National Dog Day, we are celebrating the amazing noses, brains, instincts, and hearts of all working dogs who do so much for search and rescue. 💙

Happy National Dog Day, from K9 Skye! 🐾

🧩 Autism Awareness Stickers Now Available! 🧩

🧩 Autism Awareness Stickers Now Available! 💙
The City of Humble is proud to offer Autism Awareness Stickers designed to help improve communication, understanding, and safety during interactions between officers and individuals on the autism spectrum.
Parents and guardians can pick up a sticker and complete an information form with a recent photo and important details about their child. The sticker can be displayed on a family vehicle to help officers recognize that a child with autism may be involved during a traffic stop, may become lost, or may need assistance.
Together, we can build a safer, more understanding community and strengthen the partnership between families and law enforcement. 💙

When we started Blue SAR less than a year ago, we put a LOT of thought into our mission statement. One part was especially important: educating the public on prevention and safety.
There are many search and rescue organizations doing amazing work in the field. But we wanted to do more than respond when someone goes missing. We wanted to help families and caregivers prepare before an emergency happens and know what to do when every second counts. This is especially important for vulnerable populations, including individuals with autism, IDD, dementia, and other cognitive impairments.

Recently, our Executive Director, Angelina Farris, sat down with Jennifer Dantzler of Inspire ND to talk about ways families and caregivers can prepare if a loved one elopes or goes missing. We hope you’ll give it a listen and share it with someone who may benefit.

We’re incredibly grateful to Jennifer, her team, and Inspire ND for giving Blue SAR the opportunity to share these resources with their community.
Education, preparation, and awareness can make a huge difference. If you have questions, want to learn more about Blue SAR, or would like us to speak to your organization or event, reach out anytime at [email protected].

And finally, big shoutout to Angelina. We are so proud of how she continues to lead Blue SAR with a focus on doing good work, doing it the right way, and always doing it for the right reasons.
She absolutely would not want me to say that publicly… but I don’t really care. 😘

🎙️🐾 NEW EPISODE | When Every Second Matters

Today on Shining Through: Inspiring Voices of Autism, Jennifer Dantzler welcomes Angelina Farris of Blue SAR for an important conversation about search and rescue, wandering, and preparedness.

Angelina shares how their specially trained search dog, Skye, can help locate missing and vulnerable individuals—and what families can do before an emergency happens to help search teams when every second matters.

This is one of those conversations you hope you’ll never need—but you’ll be glad you heard. 💙

When your fellow Bloodhound follows you… 🐾👀🐶

It’s K9 Honey from the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office! 💙

Honey, I see you, and I just want to say… excellent taste in Facebook friends. 😂

I hear you’re out there doing important work, too, so welcome! Remember, keep your nose down, your tail up, and never underestimate the power of a good sniff. 🐾💙

Sincerely,
K9 Skye 🐶

Recently, Blue SAR responded to a missing person search for someone with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and other critical vulnerabilities, who had been missing for approximately four hours.

Blue SAR responded within the hour and deployed K9 Skye, ultimately following a K9 trail that led to a specific location and then suddenly stopped. Searches are rarely one-dimensional and what began with a K9 trail ultimately became a search of transit routes, neighborhoods, video, multiple locations, and a whole lot of problem-solving.

The safe recovery of this young person was made possible due to a prompt call by law enforcement, K9 Skye’s trail, and by volunteers willing to keep moving, keep thinking, and keep looking - and ours did exactly that. 💙

Proud of the Blue SAR team.

🚓 Huge shoutout to the HPD patrol officer who responded and helped bring a calm, compassionate presence to a very sensitive situation.

This search is a reminder that missing person searches can have many layers and for a young person with autism, every minute matters.

To our Blue SAR volunteers: thank you for following the trail even when the trail changes and takes you 17 miles away. Your flexibility, persistence, and teamwork made a difference.

This is search and rescue. This is Blue SAR. 💙

👀 You may have to watch this one twice...

Good thing bloodhounds use their noses instead of their eyes! 🐾
💙 Enjoy Skye's recent training video!

Absolutely heartbreaking!
Their community searched day and night for almost 2 weeks. Relentlessly.

📣 Great PSA! When SARs or law enforcement ask you, the community, to search your property for a missing person or missing child, this is a great demonstration of how to search your property. Don’t forget checking inside vehicles, too! 🚙
