Join museum staff for a short 2.5 mile hike around the Peninsula Recreation Area to soak up some nature and learn more about Frisco's flora, fauna, and history this Friday, June 12. It has been nearly 20 years since these volunteers cleaned up the charcoal kilns site and added fenceposts. Our first ever Archaeology camp begins today and campers will be taking a field trip to rehabilitate this site once again! We are so excited to have them here and to work with out friends at the United States Forest Service on such a special project.

We've had one bird hike with the USFS already and our last one is this Friday! In its honor, we thought we would share this fun photo of Harold Rutherford with "Jake the Hawk". The back of the photo says that Jake turned out to be an eagle!

Check out this photo of the tracks for the Denver South Park & Pacific from the west side of Alpine Tunnel! The tunnel itself was the first bore ever made into the Continental Divide. The tunnel was so snug that locomotives and coal cars often hit the walls! This photo is believed to be from the turn of the century, just a few short years after DSP&P had gone bankrupt and this line became the Colorado and Southern Railroad.

Photos are a great way to document history and catch a glimpse into the past. 59% of our archives consist of photographs! Dan and Andrew Recen are in this photograph, brothers of Frisco's town founder, Henry Recen, as this is one of their houses in Kokomo. William Graff is also pictured here on the far left, whose brother, Alex Graff, was one of the first mayors of Frisco.

Happy ! Did you know that rhodocrosite is the official state mineral? It is most known for its bright red color from manganese carbonate, but some specimens have this rosy pink tone instead. The most famous mine for rhodocrosite is the Sweet Home Mine near Alma! The museum is lucky to have one of each colored specimen on display. Check out our gem case in the museum!
