Frostburg Fire Department

Frostburg Fire Department We proudly serve a diverse population which includes protecting the 5000+ students and faculty that attend and work at Frostburg State University.

We also respond to incidents in the surrounding communities, assisting the neighboring fire rescue departments in the Clarysville, Mt. Savage, LaVale, Midland, Shaft and Finzel areas. The FFD is composed of two stations with a primary response area of approximately 5 square miles and a population of over 15,000. We currently operate four types of apparatus to handle the emergencies and incidents t

hat occur in the area; a heavy rescue squad, an aerial ladder truck, two (2) front-line engine companies and a basic utility truck for support needs. The rescue squad, which carries up to 6 firefighters, primarily responds to motor vehicle collisions in the greater Frostburg area, including the 12 miles of busy Interstate 68 corridor, which connects Hancock, MD to Morgantown, WV but also to structural fires to carry out search and rescue duties. The aerial ladder truck, with a 105' foot rear-mount ladder and capacity for 6 firefighters, is dispatched to structure types ranging from single story houses to garden apartments to multi-story high-rises. Two Class A fire engines respond on almost all calls to provide fire suppression and we also operate a brush/utility truck and a chief's command vehicle.

Frostburg Depot, Destroyed By Fire.

Large Brick Structure Thought Set In Flames By Intruders

Deputy State Fire Marshal Jess Jacobs of Frostburg reported the large brick structure went up in flames shortly after the first call was received at 3 AM as quantities of gasoline, diesel oil, and motor oil restored in the building.

The Frostburg Fire Department answered the alarm at 3 AM when a woman said flames from the building had aroused her from sleep. When the first truck arrived, the entire center section of the building was burning through the roof. The station is located about 1/4 of a mile from the nearest hydrant and fireman had to string a line of suppl hose before any water was available. The flame spread quickly into the south end of the structure and fireman were cautioned by neighbors that gas and oil were stored in that part of the building.

Shortly thereafter, intense flames could be seen as the heated fuels in barrels escaped and resembled blow torches. In a matter of minutes, several explosions ripped the end of the building, causing the fire to spread to all parts of the structure. Flames and smoke grow several hundred feet in the air. As the roof fell in, water played on the fire had very little effect.

Several firemen escaped injury on the west side of the structure, fell outward, leaving tons of debris and bricks where the men had been standing just seconds before. Stored in the building, where 8 barrels of gasoline, 4 drums of diesel oil, 10 barrels of kerosene, 3 55-gallon drums of grease, 1 barrel of switch grease, 3 boxes of fusees, 1 box of torpedoes, and 1 welding outfit.

The Clairsville Volunteer Fire Company laid a hose from Main Street to the fire, but by this time the building was wrecked by the flames and explosions.

Jacobs said, William Platter, a Frostburg bakery owner, was on his way to work when he saw the flames. He arrived at the depot before the fire trucks and stated that doors were open. The deputy fire marshal said this led him to believe that intruders had broken into the building.

Editors note: This is not the same depot that exists near the turntable. This depot was a quarter mile down the hill located where today, a parking lot is located for the Gap Trail, near the “switchback.”

We have been in possession of the first picture for several years. FFD members posing with the very hand-drawn reel (Hose Cart) that currently resides at the Water Street firehouse. (Soon to move to the Frostburg Museum) The picture was taken at the Federal Hill Hose House, which was located on the area of 163 West Mechanic Street during the 1908 Maryland State Firefighters Association (MSFA) convention.

But we were just given the second picture (Came from Sam McCulloh's home place on Oak) and at first glance, we thought it was the same pic because it's the same 8 members. However it is a completely different hose reel. Smaller wheels with thicker spokes and if you look between the two firemen in the back you can see some beautiful ornate wrought iron with a lantern!
