Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County

Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County This is the official Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico page as of September 18, 2020. Our mission is to build homes, communities, and hope.

Founded in 1987, Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry, affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International. We work to eliminate substandard housing by providing simple, decent homes for families in need. By providing a hand-up rather than a hand-out, Habitat helps families realize their dream of owning a home. Families who qualify are able

to experience homeownership through a commitment of sweat equity, a 30-year no interest mortgage and the expectation that they will continue to support other Habitat projects. In the last 33 years, we have served over 300 individuals with affordable home ownership. Each year, nearly 700 volunteers serve our mission with their hearts and hands helping us build and rehab homes for low-income families. We also link repair programs to low-income homeowners and fund repair projects to low-income homeowners that can't get help anywhere else. We fund the mission with proceeds from the ReStore thrift shop, mortgage repayments as well as generous donations from individuals and business donations, charitable grants, foundations, and special events. Properties are acquired through donations, purchases from landowners or an agreement with local government, often with the aid of government grants. This local affiliate is governed by a volunteer board of directors with seven standing committees. Our staff consists of an executive director, development coordinator, family services manager, construction manager, neighborhood revitalization coordinator, Americorps volunteer coordinator, a HabiCorps program manager, two social work interns, and six ReStore employees. Except for licensed, skilled trades such as plumbing, electrical and HVAC contractors, Habitat houses are built with volunteers working alongside the Habitat Partner Families.

You know that Habitat builds, renovates, and repairs homes, but did you know we actively advocate for bigger changes to take place, as well? Advocating for changes on local, state, and national platforms means constant showing up, and CEO Molly Hilligoss knows how to show up! Molly recently sat on a housing panel at the MACo (Maryland Association of Counties) Conference to share new financing pathways that will help more people have access to first-time home purchases.

State and local housing leaders examine financing tools that can help Maryland counties support affordable housing development and homeownership. Turning

We believe everyone has a right to age where they want. Our Aging-in-Place program helps older adults with critical home repairs and modifications specific to each homeowner’s lifestyle, ensuring their home is safe, secure and accessible. In addition, we partner with local health care professionals, and community and veteran service organizations so older adults can get the holistic care they need to stay in the homes and communities they care about.

The results are happier, healthier older adults who are where they want to be.

A conversation about school over shared dishwashing; a run through the hose on a hot summer day; a pot filling with water, waiting to go on the stove for a batch of snowy night soup; babies laughing and splashing amidst the bubbles in the bath.

Thank you, Seaside Plumbing Inc., for donating your time and skill to build homes and memories.

Thank you to Alexa Hilty, Marketing Intern with Wellburn Management, owned by Ashley Welburn, which proudly manages 23 McDonald’s franchise locations in the area. Alexa dropped off McDonald’s Red Bull Dragon Berry drinks for our staff as a small thank you for our continued commitment to strengthening and supporting the community.

“We truly appreciate the work your team does to make a positive difference, and we’d be happy to provide a little pick-me-up for your staff!”

Thank you, Alexa and Ashley for the happy pick-me-up!
