This morning, 13 members of our Frye Island Fire Department and EMS first responders gathered for their weekly training session.

Our Fire Police team welcomed a new volunteer member while also handling vital administrative tasks. The Fire Police play a key role in our operations — meeting the ferry and guiding off-island responders to scenes on the island, directing traffic at fires and accidents, establishing road closures, keeping bystanders clear of danger, protecting our firefighters from traffic hazards, and managing our hydrant truck refill site on Ridge Road during fires.

Meanwhile, our firefighters reviewed the location and operation of equipment and tools on Engine 2 — our primary first-response truck.

We're always looking for community members who want to make a difference. If you're interested in joining us, we'd love to have you — stop by the Fire Station on Fairway Lane any Sunday at 9:00 AM.

While Frye Island is a safe community where emergencies are few and far between, we seek to ensure that we are ready and able to respond when our neighbors need a helping hand.

While last season was a comparatively busy one for Frye Island Fire-EMS, one month into the 2026 season, we are potentially on track to respond to 20% more calls than 2025 call volume.

If you are an island resident who wants to help our island neighbors and visitors, consider joining the Frye Island first responder team.

We will be hosting a volunteer information session on Sunday, May 31st at 9:00 AM at the Frye Island Fire Station, 1 Fairway Lane. We hope to see you there.

On Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at 12:30 PM, Engine 2 and Rescue 1 responded to a residential propane leak on Ridge Road. Eight Frye Island Fire & EMS personnel were on scene.

Investigation revealed that a valve on a gas appliance had been left in the "on" position inside an unoccupied residence, allowing propane to accumulate inside. Firefighters shut off the flow of propane and ventilated the residence, eliminating the hazard.
