By 2007, the fire service was waking up to a new enemy: occupational cancer. Departments needed gear that didn’thold onto soot, smoke, and toxic residue after every fire. Dräger answered with the PSS 7000 —an SCBA built for the realities of modern contamination.
Its flame-retardant, rubberized harness and non-absorbent materials meant crews could scrub off a fire’s particulates fast instead of carrying them back to the station. Reflective accents improved visibility, and the tucked-in hoses reduced snags when crawling through debris. Paired with the FPS 7000 mask and Sentinel PASS, it became one of the smartest, cleanest SCBA platforms of its time.
The PSS 7000 helped usher in a new era in U.S. firefighting, where cleaner gear was a priority.

January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month. Occupational cancer remains the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths among firefighters. We honor those impacted and reaffirm our commitment to protecting the health of the fire service. From prevention efforts to early detection, every action makes a difference. MSFCA proudly supports firefighters across Minnesota—past, present, and future.
