This week is National EMS Week, and the Etowah County Sheriff's Office has more reason than ever to celebrate the people who show up when lives are on the line.
Across this county, paramedics and EMTs are out there every day doing one of the hardest jobs there is. We are proud to work alongside them, and we don't take that partnership for granted.
But we also want to highlight our Emergency Services Unit (ESU).
Sheriff Horton has long recognized a hard truth about rural law enforcement: in a county like Etowah, deputies often arrive at medical emergencies before fire or EMS ever gets there. In the past, that meant showing up, doing what little they could, and watching situations turn tragic.
He was determined to change that — so he created a team of deputies who are triple certified as law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical responders. Through training partnerships and agreements with surrounding fire departments, these deputies are equipped to provide life-saving care the moment they arrive on scene — not just CPR, but advanced intervention that gives people a fighting chance until additional help arrives.
In emergency situations, seconds matter. The ESU is our commitment to making sure those seconds count.
To every EMS provider serving Etowah County — thank you. And know that we are working hard to be better partners to you and better first responders for the people of this county.
