🎃👻 BRING THE KIDS OUT FOR SOME HALLOWEEN FUN! 👻🎃

The Gadsden Police Department is proud to participate in this year’s Gadsden/Etowah F.O.P. Lodge #2 First Responders Trunk or Treat! 🚓🚒🚑

Bring the whole family out for a night of wholesome, family-friendly fun where children can enjoy Halloween, collect plenty of candy and goodies, and meet the first responders who serve their community every day! 🍬🍭

Events like this give our children an opportunity to interact with police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and other first responders in a fun and positive environment. We want our kids to see the people behind the uniforms, make some great memories, and know that their local first responders are here for them. ❤️💙

👮‍♂️🚒 Come meet the good guys!
🍬 Bring the kids and fill those candy bags!
🎃 Costumes encouraged!
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Fun for the whole family!

We hope to see families from across Gadsden and Etowah County come out and enjoy this special event with us!

The Gadsden Police Department looks forward to seeing YOU there! 🚓🎃🍭

Congratulations to newly promoted Sergeant Cody Owens!

The Civil Service Board promoted Sgt. Owens tonight in their regularly scheduled meeting.

Sgt. Owens has worked in several capacities within the department and has served his country in the United States Army prior to coming to Gadsden Police Department. He also knows a thing or two from his time working for the Alabama Department of Corrections.

We’re proud to watch him grow and look forward to seeing him lead our future!

25 years ago, the entire world took a breath. Our great nation witnessed one of its darkest days. That darkness also made way for our best to shine.

Firefighters climbed into danger.
Police officers ran into the unknown.
Dispatchers stayed on the line.
Strangers carried strangers.
A nation stood together.

Some of those heroes never came home. Those who did carried scars... some visible, others impossible to see and impossible to forget. So many families have carried the weight of that loss and sacrifice every day since.

For those who wear the badge, September 11th is a firm and solemn reminder of what service can ask of us, and the promise we make to answer when that call comes.

We remember the lives taken.
We remember those who ran towards danger.
We remember all we lost.

We Remember.

Never Forget.

Another great is taking it to the house!

Officer Doug Sykes is hanging up his belt after an incredible 31 years of dedicated service. Now, he’s headed into some much-deserved R&R!

Let’s hear what his supervisor and best friend, Sgt. Mitchell James, had to say about a truly special officer and an even better person:

“Officer Doug Sykes dedicated thirty-one years to law enforcement, including ten years of service as a Military Police officer.

A significant portion of his career was devoted to community policing, where he built lasting relationships with the people he served. Officer Sykes was a favorite within the community and is especially beloved by children. He regularly volunteered his time with the Head Start program and in Gadsden City Schools, demonstrating a genuine commitment to serving others beyond the responsibilities of his badge.

Known for his warmth and kindness, Doug greeted nearly everyone he met with a hug or a smile. His career was defined not only by the years he served, but by the countless lives he touched along the way.”

Thank you, Officer Sykes! Enjoy every minute of that well-deserved time off. You’ve certainly earned it!

Another 200-number calls it a career. Lt. Scott Lumpkin has recently retired from the Gadsden Police Department.

Lt. Lumpkin served in several roles during his time at GPD. Most notably, a detective and supervisor within that unit, a department instructor in everything we teach, and eventual tactical commander for the Etowah County Joint Special Operations Group.

Anyone who knows Scott knows he brought plenty of personality with him, and he certainly has left his mark on GPD.

We're thankful for his service to our community, his passion for training, and the countless hours spent preparing our officers for the future.

Lt., we hope retirement is treating you well! Thank you for your service to Gadsden, and congratulations on your retirement.

Last year, we had the honor and privilege of participating in The Great Cycle Challenge as a fundraiser to fight childhood cancer. We were able to raise $6,192.27 and rode 1,485 miles. That's a huge thank you to our community for supporting us.

Your Gadsden PD Bike Unit was recognized yesterday in Times Square, NYC, during Tribute Day for their efforts.

We're back at it again. If you'd like to donate, hit the link below and follow the steps to partner with us to help knock out childhood cancer.

The suspect wanted in connection with the shooting at Waffle House Friday night is now in custody.

We want to thank Mayor Craig Ford for his attention to this case and for helping make sure our department had the people, time, and resources needed to do the job.

This case required work from across the Gadsden Police Department. From the officers who responded that night to the CID detectives and forensic scientists who followed the evidence, each person did their part. We are also grateful to our partner agencies for their assistance and support throughout this investigation.

An arrest cannot undo what happened Friday night. We continue to pray for the injured parties and victims, their families, and everyone affected by this shooting.

The investigation remains active, and our detectives will continue working to make sure every part of this case is handled properly.

On August 21, 2026, at approximately 10:45 p.m., Gadsden Police officers responded to the Waffle House at 1000 Rainbow Drive after receiving reports of a shooting.

Several juveniles were injured, treated at the scene, and transported for further medical care. Our thoughts are with the injured young people and their families. We are committed to providing every available resource as this investigation moves forward. Thank you to Gadsden Fire Department, EMS providers, area hospitals, and LifeFlight crews for their work last night.

From the moment officers arrived, they worked to protect those at the scene, secure evidence, identify witnesses, and begin the process of holding those responsible accountable. Detectives and crime scene investigators have continued that work throughout the night and into today.

Suspects have been identified and are being sought out.

We understand the concern and anger this incident has caused, especially because it involved young people and occurred at a place where families and students gather after Friday night football. Our community should be able to enjoy those moments without fear. Our officers will continue to respond decisively to violence, protect the public, and pursue every lead in this case.

We also need the community’s help. If you saw what happened or have information about the shooting, please contact the Gadsden Police Department at 256-549-4500.

We will be thorough and persistent in this investigation. We are in contact with our state and federal partners. We will not stop working until we have pursued the facts and taken every lawful step available to seek justice. We also ask for your patience and understanding while we navigate the multiple angles within our justice system to ensure the best outcome for the victims in this case.

This remains an active investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
