After nearly 32 years of service to the City of Gadsden, Detective Ron Leek is calling it a career and beginning a well-earned retirement.

Over the course of his illustrious career, Ron has served in countless roles and done all sorts of interesting work. He's trained rookies as a Field Training Officer, solved cases as a narcotics investigator, and, most recently, served as a Detective within our Criminal Investigations Division.

Ron is also a champion for our local law enforcement as he currently serves as the President of the Alabama Fraternal Order of Police.

While his experience and investigative skills will certainly be missed, it's his relationship within our community that made the biggest impact. Ron never met a stranger, and knew someone anywhere he went. His stories, the connection he built to the community, and the friendships over three decades are something that can't be replaced.

Thank you, Detective Ron Leek, for your service, leadership, and dedication to the people of Gadsden. We wish you and your family nothing but happiness in your next chapter. Enjoy retirement, Prez, you've earned every minute.

This week marks National Police Week. This is a time to pause and reflect on the men and women in law enforcement who paid with their lives to serve and protect their communities. We also take this time to honor those who are currently laying it on the line every day and the families that stand behind them.

We remember the fallen, support those who are in the field, and recommit ourselves to service with pride, integrity, and excellence.

This morning, the Gadsden Police Department responded to the Meighan Bridge (eastbound) to reports of a man in a mental health crisis, threatening to jump.

Our Patrol Units responded as did several specialty units. The Joint Special Operations Group Crisis Negotiators responded as well and were eventually able to talk the male over the ledge and back to safety. He is now receiving care.

We would like to thank the Gadsden Fire Department for their quick response and professionalism.

We would like to remind our community that help is out there. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call 911. There is also the mental health crisis line at (256) 716-1000.

Today, we pause to honor the life and legacy of C.A. “Chris” Crisler.

Sgt. Chris Crisler believed deeply in this profession, and his passion for it remains unmatched. Just as strongly, he believed in passing that passion and knowledge on to the next generation of officers. Whether on the roadside or in the training room, he invested in people and in the craft of policing.

Gadsden PD’s resident traffic guru, K‑9 handler, and leader of innovation, Sgt. Crisler set a high standard for those around him. He lived by the motto “relentless pursuit of the criminal element,” and he carried that drive throughout his entire career. Even after retiring, he continued to serve with other departments, traveling the country to train officers with the same energy and commitment he had from the very beginning.

Chris embodied the culture we’re passionate about today: Pride. Integrity. Excellence. His drive, his knowledge, and his genuine love for the job left a lasting impact on our department and on the many officers who had the privilege of working and laughing alongside him. His legacy lives on in those he trained and in the countless lives he touched.

Our hearts and prayers are with his family during this time. We are grateful for every laugh, every smile, and every memory shared with such a wonderful friend. Relentless, to the very end.

This week we celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, and we have a lot to celebrate!

Since transitioning to Etowah County 9-1-1, we've been proud to build a strong partnership with one of the most dedicated teams around. These professionals work tirelessly behind the scenes, keeping our first responders informed and being that calm, reassuring voice when it matters most.

What makes this partnership even more special? Some of those voices come from our family, and we're grateful they're still serving this community, just in a new way.

Thank you, Etowah County 9-1-1, for everything you do. We've got your back, and we know you've got ours.
