SPC Julia Craig combined her loves of cooking and serving her country, and wound up in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. Outside of her military career, SPC Craig is a sous-chef in a French restaurant, attended culinary schools, has a goal of opening her own bakery. So why the National Guard? She says, “My life revolves around food. I even have a food tattoo. Obviously when they said I could go in as a cook that immediately sparked my interest. I thought, ‘Okay. I get to do what I love to do in the military as well.’ So, it’s kind of better for me.”

Coming home from one mission to go into another felt just like any other day for SGT Orlando Miranda. After coming home from deployment, he was activated in his home state of Colorado to fight the Marshall Fire. Even though he's assisted with natural disasters before, this one was unique. He said, "We have a fire in the middle of winter? What is going on? Yes, we did have a mild winter and it was dry. And as soon as I got home from deployment, the first snow happened. Okay, it's a mild winter. It's dry. We're in a drought. And then we have this wildfire happen. But I guess expect the unexpected, right? Be always ready. That's what we trained for.”
