What do you do if your smoke alarms go off and it's not because they are chirping from a low battery?.....where's your meeting place?.....do you remember to check the doorknob for heat if you're in a room with the door closed?....there's a lot basic things to remember involving fire safety, and if you need a refresher, there's a link below you can click on for more information. Please change your smoke detector batteries twice a year, and always call 911 for any police, fire, or medical emergency.

Does your family know what to do if the smoke alarm goes off?

Where is your meeting spot? Does your family practice home fire drills?

Last night at GTFD we had an unconventional training session. Using a maze board and tennis ball created by SCAFD Battalion Chief Cole, we used only extrication tools such as cribbing and the jaws, to manipulate the pitch of the maze and move the tennis ball throughout it. It might not sound all that difficult, but it required more finesse, patience, and planning than you would think (which was the intent of the session). Everyone who participated it enjoyed it and we look forward to trying it again soon. Thank you to BC Cole and FF Cole as well for our training session, we thought it went great!

This morning members of GTFD traveled to Roscommon for the annual Michigan Firefighter Memorial ceremony. This year was very important, as it honored Assistant Fire Chief Mike Wilbur, who passed away late last year while being an active member of the department. Assistant Chief Wilbur's name was added to the state memorial for active duty deaths. Firefighter Laynette Cole was instrumental in making this happen. Along with Firefighter Cole, Battalion Chief Dan Stevens, Captain Al Macauley, Firefighter Beth Link, and Radio Operator Tina Macauley were all there to show support to the Wilbur family, who was in attendance for having his name added to the wall, and ringing of the bell as his name was called, welcoming him home. Rest in peace brother, we miss you and will never forget you.

Since it's that time of year, here is some good information from Michigan Fire Prevention on the different tornado threats we could face from time to time. It's important to not only understand the different circumstances, but to also take appropriate actions when these threats arise. Everyone please keep safe and as always, call 911 for any police, fire, or medical emergency.

Hey everyone, there's the potential for round #2 of severe weather again later today. As always, please keep yourself aware of any evolving weather conditions and if you need us, or any other emergency response, do not hesitate to call 911.

Severe storms will be possible late this afternoon through the early evening. These may not affect all of West Michigan though, as they will likely develop east of US 131 and move southeast. The risk of severe storms is higher south and east of a line from St. Joseph to Ionia to Saginaw. The main risk from severe storms will be wind damage to trees and power lines, but we may also see large hail. An isolated tornado is not out of the question. The heavy downpours during rush hour could increase the chance for hydroplaning and localized flooding.

Looks like we'll be facing a slight risk of severe weather this afternoon and evening. Everyone please keep an eye on the weather throughout the day and keep yourselves safe. If you need assistance for wires or trees down, or any other emergency, call 911 for help.

There is a risk of severe weather this evening north of I-94, and the highest probabilities lie north of I-69. A few strong to severe storms are possible, mainly between 4 pm and 10 pm. Any severe storms will be capable of damaging winds up to 60 mph and large hail up to one inch in diameter. Be weather aware this evening with multiple ways to receive warning information.

Those of us at GTFD offer our condolences, thoughts and prayers to our brothers and sisters at SCSO, along with the family of Deputy Henderson for their recent loss.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Deputy Darrell Henderson. Deputy Henderson passed away September 11th, 2021 at Memorial Healthcare Center in Owosso due to complications from COVID that he likely contracted while on duty in the jail.

Deputy Henderson was a beloved co-worker with a big smile, and a heart of gold. He treated everyone with respect and brought great spirit to the Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Henderson was assigned to the corrections division, where he had 2 years of devoted service.

Thank you Darrell for your loyalty to your co-workers and your unwavering commitment to the Sheriff’s Office. You made work more enjoyable and will be dearly missed. Godspeed my friend.

We ask that you please keep Deputy Henderson, his family, and the members of the Sheriff’s Office in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Sheriff Brian BeGole

On this 20th anniversary of 9/11, we want everyone to know that we will never forget, not only the ultimate sacrifices made by our brothers and sisters, but also by everyday citizens who stepped up and helped others, giving that same ultimate sacrifice. On this "patriot's day", everyone please remember how we got thru 9/11 as one nation and one people. America is the greatest nation on earth and we can accomplish anything together. God bless the families of the fallen and everyone who gave their all that day to keep us safe.

While most everyone knows the practice of changing the batteries in your smoke detectors when a time change occurs, it's also important to change those same batteries whenever you hear one of your alarms chirp. When you hear that annoying sound, don't just take the batteries out and set the detector on a shelf....change those batteries....it could literally mean the difference between life and death for you or a family member one day.

When your smoke alarm is chirping, it is time to change the batteries.

Do you test your smoke alarm each month?

Do you have a smoke alarm in each bedroom? On each level of your home? Outside sleeping areas?

Here an update for everyone concerning the possibility of severe weather tomorrow per NWS. While this is just a hypothetical example of how the weather or storms could track, everyone please keep an eye on conditions tomorrow and plan accordingly for severe weather that could come into our area. As always, please avoid any downed power lines and call 911 for anything police, fire, or EMS related.

2:44 PM Mon Sep 6: Confidence is increasing that we will see fast-moving storms drop northwest to southeast through West Michigan Tuesday afternoon and evening. Some of these storms *MAY* become severe, and produce damaging winds that could knock down trees and power lines. Here is a rough estimate on when we think storms could come through. (This may change a little, so watch here or weather.gov/grr for updates!) See previous post for where we think the risk for severe storms exists, and a break-down on the threats.

Tonight during a Wednesday training session, we had someone from the Faith Church of Gaines stop by and drop off this cross with the "thin red line" design incorporated onto it. It was a wonderful gift, one that we are very thankful for and we have already put it up in our Station #1 meeting room. Thank you to the members of the church for thinking of us, taking the time to create this beautiful piece, and presenting it to us. We always want our community to know how much we appreciate them and how we always want to be there for them when they need us. Thank you so much!

Some of our firefighters spent time this morning at the ultra light fly-in sponsored by the Duffield Methodist Church. The event turned out well and we would like to thank the church for allowing us to participate and be a part of our community whenever possible. And, thanks to firefighters Babb and McLaren for taking the time to both provide fire and EMS services to the event, and representing GTFD as well. Great job by both!

Our brothers and sisters at Davison-Richfield Fire posted this earlier. It's really good information to keep in mind if you find yourself having to use a generator to power your house. Please keep this in mind and keep your family safe in turn!

We know many people are utilizing generators tonight and in the coming days. Please have working CO alarms in your house and be safe while running the generator. A little common sense goes a long way.

08/11/2021

Many power outages are occurring (including here at our office) as this line of storms brings wind gusts up to 40-55mph. In addition to strong winds expect frequent lightning and torrential rain as this front passes through.

* Warning Siren Update *

As of a few days ago, both municipal warning sirens, one in Gaines Township and the other in the Village of Gaines have been fixed. There was an electronic communication issue between the sirens and 911, making it where the sirens were not activating. A technician has fixed the problem and both sirens operated correctly as they should when tested. If anyone notices any future issues with them, please reach out to us and let us know.

Here's some good fire safety information. It's things that we've always been taught and need to make sure we have setup for our families.

Fire can happen anywhere, are you prepared?
Do u have working smoke alarms?
Does your family have an escape plan?

Every year Firefighters, Police Officers, Paramedics & EMTs, and tow truck drivers are killed while working in or alongside the roadway. When you're driving and see either an emergency or service vehicle on the side of the road with its warning lights on, please move over and give them room. This is also a state law (section 257.653a of the Michigan Vehicle Code Act 300) which states you must reduce your speed and move over, giving them room. Please help those of us who routinely find ourselves working in the roadway and give us the room we need to stay safe.

07/26/2021

We've been advised that during the severe weather over the weekend, the municipal warning siren in the Village of Gaines did not activate. We have been in contact with the siren supplier and they are supposed to address the problem later this week. Thank you to the resident who brought it to our attention, we hope to have the issue resolved soon.

Everyone please keep yourself aware of changing weather conditions this evening and take appropriate steps to ensure your safety as needed.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 10 PM for much of Lower Michigan. A watch means conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms. Wind damage to trees, power lines, and structures and large hail may occur with severe storms. We could also see a few tornadoes, but straight-line winds are the main threat. Localized flooding could also occur with heavy rain. Now is the time to stay weather-aware. Make sure you have multiple ways receive warnings, and know where your place of shelter is.

Would you guys have use for these?
Are you still taking can donations? If so, do we just drop it off at the fire station?

A fire is the ultimate double-edged sword. Nobody on any fire department anywhere wants to see a family lose everything they have, or worse, suffer and injury or death. However, we all like going to fires; I can clean and listen to people argue at home. When we enter a home for a medical emergency and a well-meaning person runs up to greet us and inform us they are a vascular surgeon, nurse or some other medical genius, we are not impressed. In fact, we wonder why we are there in the first place with such advanced medical skills already on the scene. An apartment dweller doesn't pay my salary, or even a homeowner for that matter. Their contribution to a municipal budget is minuscule in the grand scheme of things. Kind of like urinating in the ocean. But we do appreciate your contribution. No, you don't have to go to a certain hospital across town for a minor ailment. Your doctor who works at that hospital will not be there at 2 a.m. and is certainly not coming down to look at your stubbed toe. We are not passing three hospitals with competent physicians and nurses to take you to your favorite hospital. We eat. All firefighters take in all of the major food groups (and a few others also) to convert into sugars, proteins and other nutrients that our bodies need to function. We are on duty for 24 hours, sometimes longer, and need sustenance. I smile when people comment on us being at the store. I can't think of a job that you don't get a lunch break. Prisoners are fed. Astronauts eat out of toothpaste tubes in space. We do not get a guaranteed meal break. Defibrillation will not revive a poor soul who has been dead for several hours or days. If a person has lividity and there is mail stacked on top of mail in the mailbox, an electrical charge will not help. I remember finding a deceased male in a house and hearing a family member in the next room on the phone say, "They said he has been down several hours and is stiff but they are going to shock him." No we aren't! Despite how we are portrayed on television and in the movies, the majority of us are not dysfunctional, manically depressed, womanizing alcoholics. In fact, I can readily name several coworkers who have been married longer than I have been alive and even have successful children. Even better (brace yourself!), I know a few who don't drink. When we are in the middle of the living room floor doing chest compressions and artificial respirations on a loved one, the above actions indicate he has no heartbeat nor is he breathing. So, they are for all practical purposes dead. When a family member taps a responder on the shoulder and whispers, "How is dad?" it's an awkward question. It's nice when people come up to us in public and thank us for what we do and how we keep them safe. I just smile because I want to ask them if they voted for politicians who want to slash pensions and benefits. Yes, the fire truck carries water. No, the tank on my back is not an oxygen tank. It is compressed room air, which has a concentration of oxygen in it. If we wore an oxygen tank on my back, which is by the way an oxidizer, and a leak developed we might fly through the air like a cross between Mary Poppins and ET. By Will Wyatt
