Today marks the anniversary of the unsolved homicide of Jay Cecil Thames.

On Sunday, June 8, 2003, at approximately 6:52 p.m., 57-year-old Jay Cecil Thames was found deceased inside his residence at 1115 SW 3rd Avenue. Investigators determined that he had been beaten to death.

Mr. Thames lived in a quad-style apartment building. The front door to his residence was found unsecured, but there were no signs of forced entry. Investigators also learned that he frequently associated with individuals experiencing homelessness who often visited the residence.

More than two decades later, detectives continue to seek information that could help bring answers and justice in this case.

The Alachua Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying the pictured subject in reference to a criminal mischief investigation at One 51 Place Apartments.

On May 25, 2026, around 5:00 a.m., the subject entered the clubhouse gym area, damaged exercise equipment, and believed to have ripped a restroom sink from the wall, causing significant flooding and water damage to the exercise equipment, gym floor, and basketball floor estimated in the thousands of dollars.

As Crime Stoppers of North Central Florida (CSNCF), we're expanding our reach while strengthening our commitment to safer communities across the region. One of the biggest changes is our enhanced reward program. Eligible tips can now earn rewards of up to $5,000, a significant increase from the previous maximum of $1,000.

During June’s board meeting, CSNCF issued a $5,000 reward to an anonymous tipster whose information led investigators to a suspect wanted in connection with a May 10th stabbing homicide in Gainesville. According to investigators, an anonymous tip submitted to CSNCF identified the suspect known by the nickname "Hitman," leading to an arrest on charges including first-degree murder. Without this brave citizen stepping up and submitting an anonymous tip, this case could have remained unsolved.

We also awarded $1,300 for a tip that resulted in an arrest in Levy County, proving that anonymous tips continue to make a difference across the region we serve.

Gainesville Police Department needs your assistance in identifying the individual pictured in connection with an armed robbery.

The robbery occurred on Thursday, April 23, at approximately 5:50 p.m. in the 1900 block of NE 8th Avenue.
