The department consists of 24 sworn officers, 15 civilians and one canine. The Galax Police Department has established this page to share public information including: missing persons, wanted persons, crime prevention tips, arrests, crime statistics, weather events, road closures and special events. This page IS NOT MONITORED 24 HOURS A DAY. If you need a police response immediately, call 911 for

an emergency or 276-236-8101 for non-emergencies. This page is monitored and the department reserves the right to remove obscenities, off-topic comments, and personal attacks. Suspects who are charged are considered Innocent until proven guilty in court. A charge indicates that there was "Probable Cause" (a reasonable basis to believe a crime was committed and the person committed the crime) present. Guilt requires "Proof beyond a reasonable doubt" before a Judge or Jury. Once a charge has been tried the disposition record belongs to the trial court. The Galax Police Department cannot release the disposition of the case. The results of the trial are available from the court in which the case was heard.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

At approximately 9:26 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a request from a family member to conduct a welfare check at 13658 Fancy Gap Highway.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the residence. Upon arrival, two deputies made contact with a male subject identified as Michael Puckett. During the encounter, Puckett opened fire on the responding deputies. Deputies returned fire.

Both deputies were struck by gunfire. One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The second deputy was struck in his ballistic vest and is currently receiving medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition.

Michael Puckett fled the scene and remains at large. A coordinated law enforcement search is currently underway.

Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous. Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately call 911.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
