Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Office

The Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for numerous and diverse services. Writs and warrants are executed, and summons and subpoenas are served.

In addition to providing direct law enforcement and public safety service to all citizens in unincorporated Jo Daviess County, the Sheriff’s Office also supplements and assists other law enforcement agencies in the County as needed. The Sheriff, the chief principal law enforcement officer of the County, is the only full-time elected County law enforcement official provided for by the Illinois Cons

titution. The Office of the Sheriff goes back in history to old-world Europeand was brought by early settlers to this country where it has evolved into an all encompassing law enforcement agency. The Sheriff’s Office works closely with and provides assistance to the social service agencies in the County: Riverview Center, DCFS and Jane Addams. Along with providing law enforcement service, the Sheriff maintains the Jo Daviess County Jail, which is located within the Public Safety Building and has a total capacity of 27 inmates. Also located within the Public Safety Building is the Emergency Enhanced 9-1-1 Communications Center. The Sheriff is responsible for all communication and dispatching of all fire, medical, and law enforcement services throughout the County. Along with general law enforcement, criminal investigations, public safety services, maintaining the County jail, and Emergency 911, the Sheriff also provides other services including, but not limited to, water patrol and rescue, mounted and radio patrols (auxiliary patrols), a search and rescue canine unit, a narcotic detection and criminal apprehension canine unit, vehicle investigations, emergency services and disaster agency services, and Hazardous Materials Response Unit. The Sheriff also maintains dockets, registers, jail records, fingerprints, and arrest files. The Sheriff’s deputies also attend all courts on record, and accept and receipt bail in accordance with the rules of the Circuit Court.

🚔🐾 Fresh wheels for our favorite crime-fighting duo!
After years of dedicated service to our community, K9 Sam and Sgt. Furlong are hitting the road in a brand-new K9 squad vehicle. This specially equipped vehicle will help keep Sam safe, comfortable, and ready to respond whenever duty calls.
Sam has been a beloved member of our department for years, and we're excited to see him and Sgt. Furlong continue their outstanding work with this new addition to the fleet.
Be sure to give them a wave when you see them out and about!

During EMS Week, the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office would like to recognize and thank the Emergency Medical Services personnel who serve our communities each and every day.

EMS providers are often there during someone’s worst moment — responding without hesitation, providing critical care, offering reassurance, and serving with compassion and professionalism. Their dedication, training, and commitment to public service make a lasting difference throughout Jo Daviess County.

We are grateful for the partnerships we share with our local EMS agencies and appreciate the work they do alongside law enforcement, fire departments, hospitals, and dispatch personnel to keep our communities safe.

Thank you to all EMS professionals for your continued service, sacrifice, and dedication to the citizens of Jo Daviess County. Happy EMS Week!

Sheriff Kretschmer and Sergeant Gonzalez are pleased to announce that Oliver Wall-Penoyer has accepted a position as a full-time Telecommunications Officer with the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office.

T/C Wall-Penoyer previously participated in a job shadow program with our office through the Galena High School Co-Op Program during the 2025–2026 school year. This past weekend, he graduated from Galena High School and, today, on his 18th birthday, officially accepted an offer from Sheriff Kretschmer to join our team full-time.

We would also like to recognize T/C Wall-Penoyer for his dedication to Emergency Medical Services within our county. Prior to beginning his career with our agency in early June, he is scheduled to complete his EMT training with Galena Area EMS next week.

Congratulations, T/C Wall-Penoyer, and happy birthday! We look forward to you officially joining our team and are confident you will be a great asset to the citizens of Jo Daviess County.
