**Wildlife Rescue**

Just before 2100 hours this evening, the Gales Ferry Fire Company was alerted to the area of Military Highway and Mill Cove Road for a duckling in distress.

Two good samaritans walking in the area observed a duckling fall in between a retaining wall and rock piling next to the bridge and become trapped. After some careful displacement, members were able to free “Quackers” and get him on his way back to his family.
Whether human or animal, we are happy to be able to help anyone in distress!

Regatta Day!

Members are on the water and staffing apparatus at both boat houses for Fire/EMS coverage of the annual Yale/Harvard Regatta along with the Ledyard Police marine unit.

**Second Alarm of Fire**

Just after 0030 hours this morning, the Ledyard and Gales Ferry Fire Companies were alerted to the 120 Gallup Hill Road for a reported apartment fire. While units were enroute, the American Ambulance crew assigned to the town returning from the hospital reported smoke showing from the building, prompting a working fire dispatch to be requested.

Upon arrival, crews encountered fire in a top floor apartment extending to the attic space and a second alarm assignment was ordered by command. Companies initiated fire suppression, searches and ventilation efforts to bring the fire under control. Ladder 25, Engine 21 and Rescue 27 operated for several hours on scene before returning to Gales Ferry. No injuries were reported and the fire is currently under investigation by the Ledyard Fire Marshal’s Office.

At 0440 hours this morning, the Ledyard Emergency Communications Center alerted Gales Ferry and Ledyard Fire companies to the 1000 block of Long Cove Road for a vehicle fire reportedly extending to a structure. With subsequent 911 calls stating the house was now involved, the working fire dispatch was requested bringing an extra engine company from the Subase, FAST team from Mohegan Tribe, and an ambulance and paramedic unit to the scene.

First arriving units encountered two well involved vehicles with flames threatening two structures which were extinguished without any extension to either structure. The fire is currently being investigated by the Ledyard Fire Marshal’s Office and there were no reported injuries.

We thank the Subase and Mohegan Tribal Fire Departments for their assistance on scene and the Preston and Laurel Hill Fire Departments for providing station coverage while units operated at the fire.

**Working Fire**

At approximately 1223 hours today, Ledyard Center and Gales Ferry Fire Companies were alerted to Thompson Street in the Highlands neighborhood of Ledyard for a house fire.
Mashantucket Engine 1 arrived on scene reporting a working fire and stretched a line to the rear yard knocking fire from the exterior.

Engine 13 with Ledyard and Gales Ferry members stretched a line through the front door and began knocking down fire on the interior while Tanker 14 established the water supply at a nearby hydrant. Ladder 25 and Engine 21 arrived and split crews for roof ventilation, primary searches and to place an additional handline in service.
Two felines were removed from the structure during the primary search and rescusitative efforts were initiated one one by FD ems personnel and American Ambulance personnel.

One occupant was treated on scene for smoke inhalation by American EMS and the incident is currently under investigation by the Ledyard Fire Marshal’s office.

Just after 1730 hours this evening, Ledyard and Gales Ferry companies were dispatched to the 300 block of Colonel Ledyard Highway for a brush fire. Initial arriving companies reported a large, fast moving brush fire with difficult access to the area. Mutual aid companies for water supply and manpower were requested as well as a career staff callback.

Due to the remote location of the fire from accessible roadway, members had to carry portable pumps into the woods and draft from a remote water supply for suppression operations on the south side of the incident, supported by tanker-supplied water on the north side of the incident. CT DEEP wildfire officials estimated the size of the area burned at over four acres.

This was the second brush fire in town today and one of several in the local area; while the cause is still under investigation, please pay close attention not only to the DEEP fire danger levels but the weather conditions and remember that open burning in Ledyard is approved by permit only which is issued by the Fire Marshal’s office. We are in the middle of brush fire season, and even a small camp fire can quickly grow out of control and threaten neighboring properties as we have unfortunately seen in the past here in town. Please do not burn when conditions are favorable for rapid fire spread.

Just after 1800 hours, Engine 21 assisted the Ledyard Fire Company on auto aid for a vehicle fire with extension to surrounding brush off of Michael Lane.

Shortly after arrival, Brush 22 and Service 26 handled an additional call for smoke in the area off of Whalehead Road.

A reminder that the current dry conditions and wind today are favorable for rapid fire spread. The CT DEEP fire weather listing is currently “HIGH” for our area.
