There are a lot of ways to explain what VNA Community Services does. But sometimes, the people who walk through our doors every day say it better than we ever could. ❤️

This video is about more than programs, meals, activities, or a building on Grand Avenue. It’s about belonging. Friendship. Purpose. Independence. Community.

For so many older adults, VNA is a place to come when they might otherwise be home alone. A place where somebody knows your name. Where there’s a seat waiting for you, a conversation to join, something to do, and people who are genuinely glad you came.

And these are the voices that remind us why this place is worth fighting for.

Every meal we serve, every activity we offer, every case we work, every volunteer hour given, every donation received, and every person who advocates alongside us helps make this community possible.

We’ve been serving Knox County seniors for generations, and our mission today is as important as it has ever been.

🎥 Take three minutes and hear directly from the people who make VNA what it is.

Then help us make sure the next senior who needs a meal, a helping hand, a friend, or simply somewhere to belong finds an open door waiting for them.

This is their VNA. This is our VNA. And this is what community looks like. ❤️

Some things change. This hasn’t.

Watching this clip again, I was struck by how true these words still are.

Every year at VNA Community Services, we essentially have to bake the cake from scratch. 🎂

There isn't a giant pot of money waiting for us simply because we successfully served thousands of seniors the year before.

We have to rebuild it. Every. Single. Year.

Grants have to be written again. Fundraisers have to happen again. Donations have to be earned again. Partnerships have to be renewed. Government funding has to be matched, stretched, and supplemented.

Last year's success does not fund next year's mission.

And that's something I don't think people always realize when they see us selling tacos, hosting another fundraiser, asking for donations, writing another grant, or talking publicly about funding.

Those aren't "extras."

They're part of how VNA survives.

Government funding provides incredibly important ingredients, but it doesn't pay for everything. Grants expire. Funding priorities change. Food costs rise. Needs grow. And many of the dollars we receive are restricted to specific programs or require us to bring local dollars to the table.

Meanwhile, the seniors depending on us don't disappear when a grant cycle ends.

So every October, we're essentially handed another mixing bowl.

And we start baking.

We write the grants.
We host the fundraisers.
We make the phone calls.
We ask for the donations.
We advocate.
We build partnerships.
We stretch every dollar we possibly can.

Then we turn those ingredients into meals, casework, benefits assistance, programs, connection, independence, dignity, and a place to belong for thousands of Knox County seniors.

I'm incredibly proud that we've continued finding ways to make it work. But I also think it's important for our community to understand what it takes to make it work.

So when you see another VNA fundraiser, another request for support, or another conversation about senior-services funding, know that it isn't because we forgot about the money we raised last month.

We're still baking the cake. 🎂

And as long as this community keeps helping us find the ingredients, we'll keep doing everything we can to make sure there's enough to go around. ❤️

🌟 VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: DEB SHOWALTER 🌟
Celebrating a True Fixture of VNA

There are volunteers who lend a hand. There are volunteers who make a difference.

And then there are those rare people who give so much of themselves, so consistently and so joyfully, that eventually it becomes difficult to imagine the place without them.

For VNA, that person is Deb Showalter. ❤️

Deb is, without question, our most prolific and ever-present volunteer, and her contribution simply cannot be measured in hours alone—although she has certainly given us plenty of those. It's measured in the countless people she has welcomed, the friendships she has built, the laughter she has shared, and the hundreds of little things she does simply because she loves this place and the people in it.

At this point, Deb is as much a part of the VNA Senior Center as our pool tables, our gym, or the building itself.

If you've spent more than an hour here, chances are you've met her. You may have been greeted by that unmistakable smile. You may have gotten an impromptu tour. You may have heard her laughing from across the room before you even knew her name.

And even if you haven't spent much time inside VNA, there's still a pretty good chance you've seen Deb!

Over the years, Deb has graciously become one of the familiar faces appearing throughout VNA's photos, videos, social media, and promotional efforts—always willing to help us show the community what life inside our Senior Center actually looks like.

And anyone who has followed us for a while might even remember a particular fan-favorite appearance featuring Deb receiving her meal from a very enthusiastic young chef! 👩‍🍳❤️ Those are the moments that capture something statistics and program descriptions never could: the joy, friendship, generations, personalities, and genuine sense of community that make this place special.

Most mornings, you'll find Deb yucking it up with our beloved "Senior Sharks" around the pool tables, giving as good as she gets and helping create the camaraderie that makes VNA more than simply a place seniors visit.

Then, remarkably, she'll often come back again in the afternoon—not because anyone expects her to, but because that's Deb—to help clean, straighten up, and care for the Senior Center so it remains a welcoming and cherished space for everyone who comes through our doors.

That kind of dedication is extraordinary.

Deb doesn't volunteer because she wants recognition. She does it because service, community, friendship, and generosity seem to be woven directly into who she is.

But people like Deb deserve to be recognized.

Organizations like VNA aren't built only through programs, grants, meals, offices, or buildings. They're built by people who decide that a place—and the people inside it—matter enough to keep showing up.

Deb keeps showing up. Again and again and again.

Through all those hours, all those laughs, all those tours, all those pictures and videos, all that cleaning, and all those small acts of kindness that nobody could ever adequately count, Deb has left her fingerprints on the very culture of our Senior Center.

So today, we aren't simply thanking a volunteer.

We're celebrating a piece of VNA.

Thank you, Deb Showalter, for your seemingly endless generosity, your infectious joy, your willingness to be one of the faces of our mission, and for loving this Senior Center every bit as much as we do.

We love that you love VNA. And Deb, we love you too. ❤️

VNA simply wouldn't be VNA without you.

September is Healthy Aging Month, and one of the ways to age healthily is to be sure we are getting the nutrients our body needs.

September is Healthy Aging Month, a great time to reflect on how our nutritional needs evolve over time. As we age, our bodies absorb and process nutrients differently
