Sometimes, one of the greatest resources in a community is also one of the best-kept secrets.
We want to change that.
The Gordon Behrents Senior Center is so much more than a place to spend the day. For adults 60 and older with a qualifying diagnosis, GBSC provides a safe, welcoming and engaging environment where every day can include friendship, laughter, activities, outings, creativity, conversation and, most importantly, purpose and connection.
But the impact of Gordon Behrents goes beyond the people who walk through our doors each morning.
It reaches their families, too.
Caring for someone you love is one of the greatest acts of love there is. It can also be exhausting. Sometimes you need a few hours to go to work. To run errands. To make an appointment. To take care of your own home. Or simply to know that, for a little while, someone you love is somewhere they are safe, supported, engaged and having a genuinely good day.
That respite matters.
And we are incredibly fortunate to live in a community that cares deeply about its seniors.
From VNA Community Services, Caring Senior Service, Seminary Village, The Kensington, the Alzheimer's Association, and so many other organizations, caregivers, healthcare professionals, families and advocates, Knox County has an incredible network of people working every day to help our older adults live with dignity, independence and connection.
Gordon Behrents Senior Center is proud to be part of that network.
But we also want our community to truly understand what happens inside our doors.
So this is an invitation.
Come visit us.
Community leaders, families, organizations, healthcare professionals, businesses and neighbors, come see Gordon Behrents for yourself.
Come see the activities.
Come hear the laughter.
Come meet the people.
Come see what an ordinary Tuesday afternoon can look like when someone is surrounded by friends, given opportunities to participate and encouraged to simply enjoy their day.
Because sometimes the impact of a program cannot be explained through a brochure, a Facebook post or a list of services.
You have to see it. You have to feel it.
Our seniors helped build this community. They worked here. Raised families here. Supported businesses here. Volunteered here. Worshipped here. Cheered from the stands here. Made memories here.
They deserve a community that continues showing up for them.
And the families who love and care for them deserve support, too.
We would love nothing more than to open our doors and show Galesburg and Knox County exactly why the Gordon Behrents Senior Center matters.
Come spend a little time with us.
We have a feeling you'll leave understanding exactly why we're so proud of this place.
