Galesburg Organizing Project

Galesburg Organizing Project The GO Project promotes collaboration between Knox students and local residents to create meaningful change in Galesburg.

The Galesburg Organizing Project (GO Project) was created by two Knox College students who believed that there was a lack of partnership between Knox College and the greater Galesburg community. The students sought to resolve this disconnect by forming a bipartisan, inclusive organizing group, spanning the Knox and Galesburg communities in an effort to make positive political and social changes in

the town. The GO Project held its first community organizing session on April 23, 2015. Members from the Knox and Galesburg communities gathered to build relationships, discuss one another’s hopes and dreams for the town, and identify its most imminent challenges. Since then, the GO Project has grown to include over a hundred and thirty individuals who are committed to helping our community live up to its fullest potential. The GO Project uses a grass-roots organizing model to translate ideas into direct action. We are currently focused on a multi-million dollar redevelopment project being looked at by City Council, which would convert an empty 10,000 sq/ft Armory into a community or recreation center. The GO Project will spend Spring 2016 surveying the community about the Armory redevelopment project to provide City Council with citizen feedback.

Galesburg City Council voted to kill the armory proposal tonight in a (4-3) vote. While we are disappointed, we are not discouraged! As this initiative has ensued we have been busy working on other initiatives that would be promising to Galesburg. Stay tuned for initiatives regarding transportation and food justice and all other forms of justice we can manifest here in Galesburg!

Join us on Wednesday, June 1st, from 5:30-7:30pm at the Armory Open House Event!

GO Project has teamed up with the Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Galesburg to host an open house on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Galesburg Armory, located at 149 North Broad Street.

The City is seeking input from the public on the proposed renovation of the Armory into a City owned recreation/event facility. Information about the project as well as architectural renderings will be available for review. The public will be provided access to view the armory during the open house, and City staff will be available to answer questions. Community members will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite architect.

There will be music, food, games, raffle prizes, face painting, and more! Hope to see you there.

Residents can also share input on the proposed renovation of the Armory through a short online survey. Here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Armory2016

GO Project presented a canvass update at tonight's City Council meeting!
Five weeks into our campaign, 34 volunteers have knocked on 1725 doors and collected 503 surveys.

Good work, team! A special thanks to the canvassers, donors, graphic designers, supporters, and data entry team who made this happen!
