Linda Lewis, owner/manager of The Great House B&B, informed us of its history since first being built in 1857 by Silas Willard. Willard was a prominent citizen of Galesburg who was influential in bringing the railroad to the city in the 1850s. The original house did not have its prominent columns, but there is good evidence it was a stop on the underground railroad for former slaves escaping to the north. As a B&B, The Great House has received nearly all 5-star reviews and can be rented as a venue for a variety of events.

At our June 16th meeting, Chance Uhland, Assistant Director of the Galesburg Rescue Mission and Women's Shelter, told us about his difficult life experience dealing with drug and alcohol addiction, criminal behavior, and multiple imprisonments eventually leading him to Christ, sobriety, and serving as a role model for those he works with at the Rescue Mission. The Mission is currently near capacity for both men's and women's bed space. A typical duration of residence at the Mission is about six months, but may be as long as 1 1/2 years.

At our June 9th meeting, we heard from Ken Springer, President of Knox County Area Partnership. He tells us that, in addition to the important work that KCAP has been doing, the board has targeted three new development areas to work on:
* Washington Advocacy: be in DC regularly to make our needs known and assure an appropriate amount of our tax dollars flow back to our area.
* Housing Development: one limitation of the Galesburg area is the amount of available quality housing. That can be a deal-breaker for businesses considering setting up in Galesburg.
* Communications: KCAP is in the process of creating more content that will present a better online representation of the advantages of Galesburg and Knox County to the outside world.

At our May 26th meeting, Sunrise Rotary heard from Knox College's new football coach, Adam Gonzaga. Adam recounted for us his circuitous path from growing up in southern California through many stops coaching at all levels of NCAA football before arriving at Knox. His expertise has been on the defensive side of the ball, and he has previous Midwest Conference experience at Lawrence University and Lake Forest College. Adam has been on the staff at Knox only since January, but is excited about the way recruiting has been going. He expects to start the fall with one of the largest football rosters ever, in the vicinity of 100 student-athletes. He is also excited to have two strong quarterbacks who have deposited and are likely difference-makers in their future Knox careers. Welcome Adam!
