Reminder.... Happy Thanksgiving!
Paying attention could save a life!
When preparing your Thanksgiving Day meal, please remember to keep your attention on the food you're preparing. Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home fires involving cooking equipment. Never leave any kind of in-use cooking device unattended. If there's food in a pan on a burner, pay close attention. If your turkey or other food is in the oven, check on it frequently.
Failure to do so could result in a fire that gets out of control and puts your family and friends' lives at risk.
If you're deep frying a turkey, make sure you're doing so on a sturdy surface outside and away from anything that could catch fire. Do not use them on a wooden surface like a deck. If your oil boils over, it could catch the boards below on fire. Out in the middle of a driveway, away from other combustibles, would be better.
In the event there's a fire, and it's small enough, turn off the heating source and try to cover it with a lid. With that, always keep a lid nearby for that very reason. Smothering a small fire is the best course of action. Never throw water on a grease fire, as it could make the fire spread dangerously out of control.
If a fire is too much to handle, get everyone out of the house and have someone immediately call 911.
Always keep an imaginary three-foot zone around your in-use cooking devices. Do not let pets or children inside this zone. Also, keep any knives or sharp objects away from children.
Prior to having any kind of meal or COVID-considerate gathering, please make sure your smoke alarms are working properly.
Keep all cooking surfaces clear of food debris, packaging, cords, towels, rags or anything that could catch fire.
Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!
