HORRY COUNTY LIFTING CURRENT BURN BAN

Effective immediately, Monday, May 4, 2026, Horry County Government will lift the current outdoor burn ban for the unincorporated areas of Horry County. We ask you to continue to follow all regulations set forth in the Horry County ordinance regarding open burning.

As a reminder, all open burning in Horry County requires you to contact The South Carolina Forestry Commission at 1-800-986-5404, before the burn is started.

Even when the burn ban is not in place, we ask for consideration and due diligence when actively involved in open burning. Always remember to lean on the side of safety, and do not burn in windy or dry conditions.

🚫 BURNING CARDBOARD 🚫 - NO!

Q: Can you burn cardboard in Horry County?

A: No, you can't.

https://www.horrycountysc.gov/departments/fire-rescue/open-burning/

This is a common cause of fires in Horry County.

Folks will burn cardboard—which isn't allowed—in windy, dry weather conditions—which isn't safe—and the burned cardboard frequently blows away, catching nearby grass, fields and woods on fire, turning a small incident into a large one—which puts property and lives at risk—prompting heavy Horry County Fire Rescue response.

Don't do this.

If you know someone who does it, feel free to tag them (👀) and remind them it's not allowed and very dangerous.

****Reminder: the only thing you can burn lawfully in Horry County is natural debris that originated on that property, like leaves, branches, sticks and grass, and only with the utmost level of caution. And that's AFTER you've confirmed weather conditions are safe, reviewed our open burning information and contacted The South Carolina Forestry Commission at 1-800-986-5404.****
