SUMNER COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE SECURES 42-YEAR SENTENCE IN ATTEMPTED MURDER, MURDER SOLICITATION, AND JAIL ASSAULT CASE

The Sumner County District Attorney's Office has secured a 42-year prison sentence against Larry Wayne Cole following his guilty pleas to Attempted First Degree Murder, Solicitation to Commit First Degree Murder, and assaults on two law enforcement officers while incarcerated.

Today, Cole appeared before Judge Jennifer Nichols and pleaded guilty to all charges. Judge Nichols sentenced him to serve an effective sentence of 42 years in the Tennessee Department of Correction.

The convictions stem from a violent attack that occurred in 2024, when Cole tracked his former spouse's movements by secretly placing an electronic surveillance device on the victim's vehicle. After locating the victim in the parking lot of a Walmart in Gallatin, Cole broke into the victim's vehicle and repeatedly stabbed the victim before fleeing the scene. Following the attack, Cole traveled across the country and was ultimately apprehended while attempting to cross into Canada at a border crossing in Maine.

While awaiting trial in the Sumner County Jail in 2025, Cole attempted to orchestrate a second attack. He solicited another inmate, who was preparing to be released from custody, to murder the victim and the victim's entire family at their Wilson County residence.

Fortunately, the inmate immediately notified local authorities. Investigators with the Sumner County Sheriff's Office and the Gallatin Police Department worked together to prevent the planned murders before they could be carried out. During the investigation, law enforcement recovered maps of the victim's residence, coded references identifying the home's location, and evidence that Cole had offered payment in exchange for the murders. That evidence became critical to the successful prosecution.

Cole also pleaded guilty to assaulting two Sumner County Sheriff's Office correctional officers while incarcerated.

The successful prosecution was the result of the outstanding work of Gallatin Police Department Investigator Ross Hollins, who served as the lead investigator in the attempted murder case and continued his work during the subsequent solicitation-to-commit-murder investigation. Detective Bryan Ashley of the Sumner County Sheriff's Office initiated and developed the investigation into the murder solicitation, which ultimately led to the additional charges against Cole.

Assistant District Attorney David Vorhaus prosecuted the case on behalf of the Sumner County District Attorney's Office.

The District Attorney's Office also recognizes the extraordinary courage and perseverance of the victim and the victim's family throughout this prosecution. Their cooperation and commitment to seeing justice served were instrumental in bringing these cases to a successful conclusion.

Davis Fyke was arrested for DUI following an alleged hit-and-run in Gallatin Saturday.

Deputies found him unconscious at a state park, where he was subsequently arrested, booked, and released later that night.

Fyke then decided to return to the park, resume drinking, and drove off-road in the campground where beer cans were found, spilled from the vehicle.

He was arrested for DUI a second time in 12 hours.

Fyke is now being held on a $125,000 bond.

The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted through due process of law.

Another productive day of training for ESD K9 River and handler Deputy Stephanie Reaber.

Working alongside several partner agencies at the Nashville Airport, the training featured realistic search scenarios in which K9 teams located electronic devices concealed throughout aircraft, baggage claim areas, and airport terminals. Exercises like these sharpen detection skills, reinforce effective search techniques, and prepare our teams to respond confidently in real-world situations.

Thank you to the Nashville Airport Police, TBI K9 Agent Marvel, K9 Stella from the Hendersonville Police Department, and K9 Teddy from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office for a great day of training.
