Tomorrow, early voting begins for the South Lafourche Levee District millage renewal.

This is not a new tax. It is a continuation of the funding that has supported every levee improvement, every navigation structure, and every pump that protects this community — including the increase in levee heights that made a difference when Hurricane Ida hit.

Early voting runs June 12 through June 20. Election Day is Saturday, June 27.

Support the South Lafourche levees. Make your voice heard.

For nearly 60 years, the South Lafourche Levee District has kept this community protected. The levees that held during Hurricane Ida. The navigation structures that keep the bayou working. The work that happens every single day, whether a storm is coming or not.

On Friday, June 12, early voting begins on the millage that funds it all.

This is not a new tax. It is a continuation of the investment this community has already made in itself. This millage renewal is only for South Lafourche voters to fund SLLD projects for the next ten years.

Early voting runs June 12 through June 20. Election Day is Saturday, June 27.

In 1968, the South Lafourche Levee District was created with a simple goal: protect our community from floodwaters.

Nearly 60 years later, that mission has not changed. The system has grown, the technology has improved, and the partnerships have expanded — but the work is the same.

Your home. Your kids' school. The road you take to work. The business you built from the ground up.

The levee system in South Lafourche was designed to protect all of it.

When the District maintains those 48 miles of levees and keeps the navigation structures operating, it is not just infrastructure work. It is the reason families can stay in the communities they grew up in.

On Tuesday, Executive Director Nic Matherne spoke at the Lafourche Chamber of Commerce luncheon, sharing updates on recent project improvements, how our levees held during Hurricane Ida, and the protection SLLD provides to South Lafourche.

Thanks to the chamber for the invitation and to everyone who came out.

Over the last 10 years, the South Lafourche Levee District raised the height of 48 miles of levee by an average of 2 feet.

Two feet might not sound like much. But when Hurricane Ida made landfall and pushed a 16-foot storm surge into South Lafourche, those two feet were the difference between dry floors and floodwater.

Had Ida hit in 2016 — before that work was done — all of Golden Meadow and most of Galliano, Cut Off, and Larose would have flooded.

They did not flood. Because the work got done.
