Just a reminder!

On Sunday, June 14, 2026 at 2:00 PM, join us for "Mayhem, Murder, and Madams", and learn about some of the fascinating people and crimes from a little area of Gallipolis known as Dogham.

From the 1890s -1910s, Dogham was a location filled with excessive drinking leading to mayhem, uncontrolled violence leading to murder, and prostitution controlled by local madams.

The Gallipolis Daily Tribune described the area as a "shady scummery", an "odorous locality", and a "haunt and headquarters for all the lowest characters."

This local history program is presented by Becky Birchfield and the Bossard Memorial Library Reference Department.

This event is free and open to all

The Library's new StoryWalk title is now on display at the French Art Colony.

Our title for June is Dark on Light written by Dianne White and illustrated by Felicita Sala.

"Gentle the evening. Sweeping the skies.

Dark the shadows as twilight arrives.

Rose the horizon, gleaming and bright.

Twilight and evening and dark on light."

A group of children explore the woods near their home in search of their wandering puppy.

As they search, they observe the beauty and wonder of the world at night.

Just a reminder!

On Saturday, June 13 at 2:00 PM, turn back time to the 1740's with Hunter and Breanna Cogle as they demonstrate what life was like during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745.

In Scotland in the 1740's, men took up arms against the British in hopes of restoring Prince Charles Edward Stuart, "Bonnie Prince Charlie", to the throne. Many men brought their families with them on campaign during this time. After a number of battles, the Scots were defeated at the Battle of Culloden in 1745. The British then proceeded to dismantle Highlander and Scottish clan culture.

Thousands of Jacobite sympathizers fled to the 13 colonies and settled in New York, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina.

Hunter will discuss the clothing, equipment, weapons and tactics of a Highland Tacksman of Clan MacLachlan. He will offer insights on who the Jacobites were, what their cause was, and what became of them.

Breanna will discuss the life and role of women in the clan system, her clothing and kit, as well as her duties as the wife of a tacksman and officer of the army.

This event is free and open to all.
