Can we compare this American Rubyspot to a ginger with too much sunscreen on? They are looking a little pale, but it's not from having to avoid the sunshine. It's because they are in their teneral phase! The teneral phase happens just after a damselfly emerges from their aquatic exoskeleton. While it takes them about an hour to get their wings pumped up and flight ready, it can take them a couple days for their pretty colors to set in.

Ranger Nick brought some fun nature knowledge out to our West Jefferson neighbors as part of National Night Out. Occasionally, we do have to let our rangers out for some enrichment out of the park. The squirrels and raccoons only listen to park rules half the time.

Choo choo! A little bit of surrounding park land history coming through below. The original wooden line was built in 1854, but has been raised to eliminate the dip in the valley that the steam engines struggled with. This shortline railway is still in use. Originally it was used to transport livestock, grain, and people. The current Conrail line is used to haul grain from Lilley Chapel in Madison County to Galloway in Franklin County. The large blocks of rock that line the bank to help control erosion, were salvaged from the earlier "twin bridges," that spanned the creeks before 1990.
