PSA: The offices of the County Assessor, Clerk, Treasurer, GIS and Bureau of Elections will be closed on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 as we clean up from the flooding that occurred on Tuesday. Offices are scheduled to reopen on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at 8:00am.

McKinley County is pleased to announce that the McKinley County Metro Dispatch Authority (MCMDA) recently received its accreditation by the New Mexico Emergency Communications Professional Standards Accreditation Program.

The certification means that the organization follows a set of professional standards that include standardized policies, site inspections and training. The goal of the organization is to enhance professionalism, uniformity and consistency in the operation of 911 emergency communications in New Mexico.

The McKinley County Metro Dispatch Authority serves as the central communication hub for multiple law enforcement, fire services, emergency medical, and other public safety agencies in Gallup and McKinley County, New Mexico.

“Achieving accreditation is not just a badge of honor; it is a fundamental component of our mission to provide effective, reliable, and professional emergency communication services,” MCMDA Communications Director Alissa Copi said. “It reinforces our dedication to serving our community with excellence and ensures that we remain a trusted partner in public safety.”

Description :

At 156 PM MDT, emergency management reported thunderstorms producing
heavy rain across the warned area. Between 0.5 and 1.5 inches of rain
have fallen, and multiple water rescues are occurring. The expected
rainfall rate is 1.5 to 2 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall
amounts of 0.5 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash
flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.

HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing
flash flooding.

SOURCE...Emergency management reported.

IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban
areas, highways, streets and underpasses.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...
Gallup, Church Rock, Vanderwagen, Yah-Ta-Hey, Rock Springs, Red
Rock State Park, Allison, Red Rock, Gamerco and Mentmore.

This includes Interstate 40 between Mile Markers 16 and 33.

Authoritative Instructions :

Do not enter or cross flowing water or water of unknown depth!

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Arroyos, streams, and normally dry rivers can become raging killer
currents in a matter of minutes. Water in arroyos can travel many
miles and take hours to reach your location from upstream rain areas.

The McKinley County Roads Department is wrapping up another successful road improvement project in Pinedale this week. Over the past two months, county crews have resurfaced approximately four miles of Rainbow Trail and Lobo Valley Roads near the Chapter House. This week, they completed the project by applying the final layer of asphalt and chip seal, improving both the safety and longevity of these important community roads.

Over the course of the week, more than 550 county officials and their families from across New Mexico visited our community. Hosting an event of this size requires tremendous teamwork, and we are grateful for the support and collaboration of the City of Gallup, New Mexico Government, New Mexico Counties, Gallup-McKinley County Schools, McKinley County Sheriff's Office, McKinley County Find Your Joy, McKinley County Fire Rescue, McKinley County Office of Emergency Management Gallup Express, Sammy C's Rockin Sports Pub & Grille and many other partners, volunteers, and community members.

Time to CRAWL……

Gallup and McKinley County are gearing up to host county employees from around the state during the 2026 New Mexico Counties Conference. As part of this conference, the City and County are hosting the County Crawl at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16. This is a free event similar to the popular Arts Crawl, hosted by the Business Improvement District.

This is a free event open to the public between 2nd and 3rd Streets on Coal Avenue. Please join us for a great evening!

The McKinley County Roads Department opened a newly completed section of Superman Canyon Road (CR43A) this week. The 2-mile stretch replaces a badly eroded section that could not be improved because of archaeological sites in the area. Funding for the project was provided through the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Transportation Improvement Program.
