The final weeks of the CDCR Academy brings together the knowledge, skills, and abilities our cadets have developed throughout their training. During Reality Based Alarm Response Training, cadets are given a detailed foundation of techniques utilized to respond to emergency situations. Through numerous scenarios, the cadets are trained on how to utilize safe tactics, communicate effectively, demonstrate command presence, apply appropriate force options, utilize protective equipment, and document their actions with report writing. This training prepares cadets to become safe and effective responders to disorders and to maintain the safety and security within a correctional institution.

Transportation is an essential responsibility of a correctional peace officer and one of the career paths CDCR has to offer. Class 3-26A cadets are learning the policies, procedures and expectations for conducting transports related to medical appointments, court appearances, institutional transfers, and parole releases. Every transport requires professionalism, sound judgment, and a commitment to safety. Thank you to the staff from the Northern Transportation Hub for sharing their knowledge and experience with our cadets and giving them a firsthand look at the important work involved in transportation.

Serving our community goes beyond the Academy. It’s about showing up, giving back, and making a difference where we live and work. Our CDCR Academy staff and cadets came together through the Badges & Backpacks program to support local children as they head back to school. Together, they assembled and helped distribute out 39 backpacks giving each child the opportunity to pick out a backpack and receive the school supplies students need to start the year ready to learn. What’s inside the backpack is only part of the story. It’s about letting a child know their community supports them, believes in them, and wants to see them succeed. We’re proud to serve our community both on and off the Academy grounds because sometimes, a small act of kindness can make a lasting difference.

On August 4, CDCR Academy staff and cadets were proud to participate in National Night Out in Galt alongside Northern Transportation Hub and Division of Adult Parole Operations.

Being part of public safety means being an active part of the communities we serve. National Night Out was a great opportunity for our staff to connect with the public and for our cadets to step into leadership roles, engage with community members, and represent CDCR beyond the training environment.

Experiences like these help prepare our cadets to become not only correctional officers, but leaders who understand the importance of service, connection, and community.

Our CDCR Academy Culinary team prepares thousands of meals each month to keep cadets, staff, instructors, and training participants fueled for the demands of Academy life. During one of our busiest months, they served nearly 18,000 meals while continuing to provide quality, nutritious options. As we expand healthier daily menu choices, we’re proud of the dedication and care this team brings to every plate. Thank you for being an essential part of our Academy’s success.

What are impact munitions?

The 40mm impact munitions launcher is specialized less lethal equipment used by correctional peace officers under specific circumstances and in accordance with departmental policy.

At the CDCR Academy, cadets receive classroom instruction and practical application focused on safe operation, policy, decision making, and accountability. Before carrying the launcher in an armed assignment, every cadet must demonstrate proficiency and qualify to departmental standards.

Effective training isn’t just about learning how to use equipment it’s about developing the judgment to know when its use is appropriate. That commitment to professionalism supports CDCR’s mission of maintaining safe and secure institutions.

Halfway through the Academy, we asked cadets to reflect on where they’ve been, what they’ve learned, and who they’re striving to become before graduation.

Their answers aren’t about perfection. They’re about perseverance, growth, and the commitment to keep improving every single day.

Because the strongest correctional peace officers aren’t defined by where they began they’re defined by the choices they make along the way.
