West End friends, keep an eye out for something new on the beach! 🏖️
Up2U boxes are being placed along West End beaches this week, providing free trash bags for beachgoers to pick up the trash they create and any litter they find along the way. It’s a simple way we can all help keep Galveston’s beaches clean and beautiful.

A big thank you to the Up2U Litter Prevention Campaign for letting Galveston benefit from this great program, and to Wayne Oliver and the Linde team in Texas City, who built 10 wooden Up2U boxes for the island. Our beaches are even better because of you! 💙

You can now find Up2U boxes on the beach in front of:
• Spanish Grant
• Bermuda Beach
• Texas Campgrounds
• Pirates Beach
• Sea Isle
• Pointe San Luis Laguna and Playa

Grab a bag and help leave the beach better than you found it. 🌊

Bringing national honors back to the beach! 🌊🏆 Galveston Island Beach Patrol’s Junior Guards and competitive team made an impressive showing at the USLA National Lifeguard Championships in Fort Lauderdale!

Their hard work builds more than strong athletes - it sharpens the rescue skills that help keep our beaches safe every day.

👏 Help us congratulate the team below, and read Chief Kirwin’s full column 👇

USLA Nationals Recap
By Chief Austin Kirwin, Galveston Island Beach Patrol

Last week the Galveston Island Beach Patrol competed in the United States Lifesaving Association's National Lifeguard Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This yearly event showcases both lifeguards and junior lifeguards in a series of events that directly relate to lifeguarding. It gives an opportunity for guards of all ages and across the entire country to show their dedication and commitment to saving lives in a competitive atmosphere.

The four-day competition had 18 different events including running, swimming, paddling, rowing and combinations of those disciplines. It includes multiple rescue races as well as both individual and team events.

This year’s competition brought together more than 1,200 competitors from 33 lifesaving agencies. Although Galveston had a smaller team this year, our junior guards and full-time guards delivered a strong performance. I am incredibly proud of our team!

Our Junior Guards really shined this year, with several standout performances against fields of more than 60 competitors in each age group.

Leading the way was Maddie Scott, who became a national champion with a first-place finish in the beach run. She also earned third in the surf swim relay and recorded three additional top five finishes.

Zoey Scott brought home second in the run-swim-run and third in the 2K beach run, along with two more top five finishes. Ryan Pryor earned third in the beach 2K run and teamed up with Henry Anderson for seventh-place finishes in both the board rescue and swim rescue races.

C**t Pryor finished fifth in the surf swim relay and eighth in the beach 2K run, adding two more top 10 finishes, while Houston Pryor also had a strong showing with an eighth-place finish in the beach 2K run.

With the level of competition they faced, our Junior Guards represented Galveston exceptionally well. One of the goals of our Junior Guard program is to develop the next generation of professional lifeguards, and performances like these show that our future is a bright one.

Our professional lifeguards also brought home some impressive results within their respective age groups. Loree Pryor led the group with second-place finishes in both the 2K beach run and 70-meter sprint, plus fourth-place finishes in beach flags, run-swim-run and the surf ski race. Penny Scott earned third in the run-swim-run, fourth in both the 2K beach run and 70-meter sprint, and fifth in beach flags. Melanie Hooper rounded out the podium finishes with third place in beach flags.

Throughout the summer, lifeguards train daily and compete on Sunday mornings to try and qualify for the competition team. This doesn't just build strong athletes. It pushes all our guards to train and hone their craft, which leaves them better equipped to handle the many emergencies we respond to throughout the summer. Please help me congratulate them.

See you on the Sand.

🌟 Trustee Spotlight: Jan Collier 🌟

This month, we’re proud to spotlight Park Board Trustee Jan Collier, a dedicated community leader whose commitment to service, hospitality and Galveston has touched many corners of our island community.

Jan was appointed to the Park Board of Trustees in July 2025, returning to the Board after previously serving from 2018–2020. Her lifelong passion for hospitality began in high school and grew into a career centered on guest service, community engagement and leadership. For Jan, hospitality has always meant more than creating a great experience—it’s about building genuine connections and strengthening the community she calls home.

That spirit of service extends throughout Galveston. In addition to serving as a Park Board Trustee, Jan serves as Chair of the Galveston Chapter of the Texas Restaurant Association and Chair of the Tourism Development Advisory Committee. She also lends her time and leadership to the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce, The Grand 1894 Opera House and the Galveston Hotel & Lodging Association.

Jan’s connection to Galveston is also deeply personal. She and her late husband, Joey, a third-generation BOI, built a beautiful life together after marrying in 2014. Their blended family includes three daughters, Nicole, Dezirea and Jessye, and granddaughter Layla Rayne.

This year brings another meaningful milestone as Jan is being recognized by the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce as one of 9 Women of the Year honorees—a fitting acknowledgment of the leadership, generosity and dedication she brings to her community.

We are grateful for Jan’s continued service to Galveston and proud to celebrate a Trustee who leads with heart, values connection and remains deeply committed to the community she loves.

Please join us in congratulating Jan on this well-deserved recognition! 💙

Galveston’s story is taking the national stage!
We’re thrilled to announce that Visit Galveston’s 125th anniversary of the 1900 Storm has been named a finalist for the U.S. Travel Association's prestigious ESTO Awards in the Immersive Experiences category.

We couldn’t be prouder to see Galveston’s history, creativity and storytelling represented on this stage. We're up against some stiff competition with Cody Yellowstone, Wyoming and St. Pete Clearwater, Florida.

Next stop: Philadelphia, where the winner will be announced at ESTO on August 25! 🌴🏆

Good luck to all the finalists!

Whether you work in tourism or not, its impact touches every corner of our community.

From supporting local jobs and small businesses to helping fund essential public services, visitor spending plays an important role in Galveston's economy and quality of life.

Our newly released 2025 Tourism Economic Impact Report shows just how much that impact adds up.

📊 By the numbers:
• 9.1 million visitors
• $1.3 billion in visitor spending
• $1.7 billion in total economic impact
• 12,799 local jobs supported—nearly 1 in every 3 jobs on the island
• $417.6 million in personal income for local workers
• $125 million in state and local tax revenue supporting essential community services

These numbers represent more than tourism; they represent local paychecks, thriving businesses and investments that help make Galveston a great place to live, work and visit.

Thank you to our hotels, restaurants, attractions, retailers, event organizers and community partners who make these results possible every day.

🪣♻️ Build memories, not waste.

The Park Board's Beach Toy Borrow Boxes help make every beach day a little more sustainable. Borrow a bucket, shovel or sand toy while you're at the beach, then return it before you leave so another family can enjoy it.

Have gently used beach toys at home? Give them a second life by donating them to one of our Beach Toy Borrow Boxes. Every donation helps reduce plastic waste, keeps our beaches cleaner and makes beach days more fun for everyone.
📍 You can find Beach Toy Borrow Boxes at:
