This isn’t a haunted house.
It’s a haunted heart.

We had two special visitors today. Kelly of My Galveston: Adventures of a Local Tourist stopped by to see the progress and when we went into Daisy's room a tiny hummingbird was there. He flew immediately to Kelly's phone. I couldn't react fast enough to get a picture but when he flew to check out my phone, Kelly caught this great picture..

Today we remember Eliza Kempner, who was not only the matriarch of the Kempner clan, but a force in theGalveston community throughout her long life.

On September 26, 19 47, Eliza died at home at the age of 95, having lived at the League-Kempner House for the last 27 years. As was the custom, the funeral was held at the house before burial in Galveston.

While living in the house, she continued the charitable work and philanthropic giving that characterized her throughout her life. Two of her favored local beneficiaries were the Galveston Orphan’s Home and the Rosenberg Women’s Home both of which she
helped found and where she served as a Lady Manager for more than 50 years.

Following the 1900 storm, she devoted herself to helping with recovery efforts, petitioned the State for recovery money, and promoted pure milk laws. She regularly used her home to entertain members of the groups she supported. Almost until the end, her family was expected at Friday night family dinners at the house, continuing her close family bond with her children and grandchildren.

Three of her children who never married, Gladys, Lee, and Stanley; plus her daughter Fannie, a widow with one child, lived with Eliza most of their lives. Beyond her own efforts, she left a legacy of a family dedicated to service through public and private good works.

In the book, “Recollections, her son Ike said “Her judgment keen up to her last illness, her heart ever deeply sympathetic with those in sorrow or want, especially the aged and the orphans.” He continued: “She strongly favored doing charity personally buct
unostentatiously while she lived.”
