It wouldn't be Galveston Pirate Week without a quick Jean Lafitte history lesson! 🪎

🇲🇽 Lafitte claimed Galveston Island under the Mexican flag.
👑 For several years, he ruled Galveston like a pirate king.
🏠 His island home, Maison Rouge - or the “Red House”- doubled as a fortress.
💥 Cannons lined its upper floor, while treasures from captured ships reportedly filled its rooms.
🔥 When ordered to leave in 1821, Lafitte burned his home, fort and settlement before sailing away.

The structure you see today was built in 1870, right over the old cellars and foundations of the original Maison Rouge. 🏴‍☠️ The legend of Jean Lafitte lives on throughout Galveston!
