The Galveston and Texas History Center is proud to have collaborated with The Grand 1894 Opera House to include images of century-old theatre programs in the Grand's brand-new museum exhibit! 🎭

Our archivists digitized more than 100 pages from Grand programs dating from 1895 to 1923. These pages are chock-full of details about upcoming performances, images of actors and actresses who graced the Grand’s stage, and advertisements for Galveston businesses of the early 20th century. You can see these fascinating glimpses into the past on a *grand* scale in the new museum exhibit, complete with an immersive audio tour, beginning Monday, Oct. 5.

This week is , and today we celebrate one of Galveston’s most illustrious Deaf citizens, LeRoy Colombo. Born on Dec. 23, 1905, and left deaf after a severe childhood illness, Colombo went on to become a champion long-distance swimmer and a legendary lifeguard on Galveston’s beaches, with more than 900 confirmed saves.

Visit the Galveston and Texas History Center on our fourth floor to learn more! On the History Center website, you can also read an article on Colombo (as well as lifeguard Carmelo "Charles" Bertolino) written by Kevin Kinney and originally published in 2023: https://www.galvestonhistorycenter.org/news/two-galveston-lifesavers-2
