A few weeks ago some of our lifeguards and Junior Lifeguards got the opportunity to represent our agency in this year’s USLA National Lifeguard Championships.

We’re proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our Galveston Lifeguard team at this year’s competition!

The Galveston Lifeguarding Association placed 17th out of 25 teams in the A division.

Big shoutout to the men and women protecting our beaches in Galveston this summer! 🌊☀️

Our lifeguards have put in countless hours of hard work and dedication, with the majority of our staff working nearly every day to help keep our community and visitors safe. Their commitment, professionalism, and willingness to serve does not go unnoticed.

Thank you to every member of the Galveston Beach Island Patrol for everything you do. Stay safe, and here’s to the rest of a great summer!

This past week, several of our lifeguards had the opportunity to compete in the USLA Gulf Coast Regional Competition. While we didn’t come out on top, Galveston finished 2nd overall with numerous podium finishes.

On the men’s side, Kai Janko took 1st place in Beach Flags, with Dion Merchant finishing 3rd. Newcomer Seth Philips won the Surf Race, while Kai followed closely behind with a 2nd-place finish. Estaban Cifuentes took 3rd on the surf ski and Ironman.

On the women’s side, newcomer Emily Johnson earned 2nd place in the Surf Race, with Kyanna Janko finishing 3rd. Kyanna also took home the silver medal in the Run-Swim-Run. In the Board Rescue Race, Melanie Hooper and Kyanna Janko earned 2nd place, while Emily Johnson and Sophia Sigafoose finished close behind in 3rd.

Our Landline Relay teams also had outstanding performances. The men’s team Kai Janko, Dion Merchant, Jeff Mullin, and Estaban Cifuentes claimed 1st place, while the women’s team Kyanna Janko, Melanie Hooper, Abie Hart, and Emily Johnson earned 3rd place.

Many of our competitors also finished among the top overall athletes in the competition. On the men’s side, Kai Janko finished 2nd overall, Estaban Cifuentes placed 3rd overall, and Jeff Mullin earned 4th overall. On the women’s side, Kyanna Janko finished 4th overall.

Congratulations to all of our competitors for representing Galveston and putting together an outstanding showing at the regional championships!

Galveston Island Beach Patrol Junior Lifeguard Day Camp Program is available for sign up. The dates of the camp are between June 1st - July 10th, 2026.

We would like to invite youths between the ages of 10 and 15 to consider participating in our camp. Which provides an opportunity to gain water safety training and hands-on lifeguarding experience.

To participate, youths should have an interest in the beach environment, must be able to swim two laps (100 meters) without stopping, and be able to tread water for five to seven minutes depending on their age category.

We have more tryout dates coming up! Our soonest is on May 1st at 9 AM at the UTMB Field House (215 Holiday Dr, Galveston, TX 77550).

You can start working with us at 16 years old, and no experience is needed. We will teach you all the certifications required in our two-week paid lifeguard academy.

We hope to see you at the next tryout!
