1983 was one of the quietest hurricane seasons on record with only four named storms. Forty three years ago today Hurricane Alicia, with 115-130 mph winds and 12 feet of surge, devastated Galveston. This rapidly intensifying storm was the last time the island was hit by a hurricane that was classified as a “major” storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

The 22 foot storm surge of Hurricane Ike came along years later and proved that wind is not always the worst threat tropical cyclones bring. Surge modeling has since become a critical component of threat and hazard forecasting.

The impact of Hurricane Alicia serves as a poignant reminder that even in a quiet season, it only takes one storm to cause significant devastation.

We are nearing the height of Hurricane Season 2026, and the Atlantic is warming up. Tropical Storm Cristobal has formed in the northeastern Atlantic and is not expected to impact land. The NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center is monitoring two areas off the coast of Africa heading west. Although neither area is expected to impact the Gulf at this time, we will continue to closely watch these areas. This is a good reminder that as a coastal community, we must all stay prepared and weather aware.

Extreme summer temperatures take a toll on vehicles. Heat can speed up internal chemical reactions in car batteries, causing sudden breakdowns when fluids evaporate. Strained cooling systems struggle in intense heat, especially when fluids degrade and evaporate much faster. Tire blowouts are common when hot pavement weakens rubber and may increase tire pressure. To stay safe park in the shade when possible, maintain fluid levels and monitor tire pressure, especially in the heat of the day.

As the summer heat continues to rise, it is critical to include your household pets in your disaster and emergency plans. While all pets are at risk in extreme heat, there are some animals that are more vulnerable when temperatures rise including flat-faced breeds, very young and very old pets, animals that are obese, and those with breathing or heart problems. Here are some tips that may help you keep your four legged family members safe in Galveston summers:
- Do not leave pets in parked cars, even those in the shade or with cracked windows. Vehicle interior temperatures can rise up to 20° in just 10 minutes and up to 50° in an hour.
-Walk pets only in the early morning or late evening. Pavement temperatures can increase dramatically up to 150°, causing serious burns to paws.
- Keep cool water available for your animals at all times.

Children overheat and dehydrate much faster than adults and are at a significantly higher risk of heat related illness when summer temperatures soar. Never leave children unattended in vehicles, even for a few minutes. Dress kids in loose, lightweight clothing and keep outdoor activities limited to mornings and evenings. Constantly offer water to children if they must be outside on hot days. Call 911 and seek immediate medical attention if child has a fever over 104°, hot/dry skin, fainting, fast breathing or confusion.

Take care when wade fishing and stay at least 100 to 500 feet away from piers and jetties to avoid hazardous rip currents and predatory sharks drawn to discarded bait. Fish with a buddy and wear sunscreen and a life preserver. Stay hydrated and make sure you communicate your location and plans to someone at home.

As you head out to work this morning, make sure you are ready for a windy day as Tropical Storm Bertha moves into the area. Bertha is expected to deteriorate as she comes ashore. While no significant impacts are forecast, some gusty storms may blow through the island throughout the day. Secure any outdoor items that may become projectiles in windy conditions.
