On June 2, 2026, at 10:36 p.m., the Garden City Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a tree on fire in a shelterbelt approximately 3½ miles east of Garden City.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that a large cottonwood tree had been struck by lightning, igniting a nearby downed tree. Crews quickly brought the fire under control and extinguished it before it could spread further through the shelterbelt.
After the fire was extinguished, firefighters spoke with the homeowner, who reported noticing the smell of something burning as early as Sunday morning but was unable to locate the source. The fire was not discovered until flames became visible on Tuesday evening, prompting a call to 911.
Garden City Fire Department personnel remained on scene for approximately 90 minutes to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and no additional hazards remained.
The Garden City Fire Department reminds residents that lightning strikes can smolder undetected for extended periods before becoming visible. If unusual burning odors are noticed following a storm, property owners are encouraged to inspect the area and report any concerns promptly.
