Did you know that Kansas offers three options for Property Tax Refunds through our Homestead program? The Kansas Department of Revenue currently administers the programs below, and the benefits vary by program and qualifications.
If you meet the criteria below, you may be entitled to a refund on a sizable portion of your property taxes!
WHICH PROGRAM IS BEST?
The original Homestead program is geared toward providing assistance to more early seniors (55), veterans and spouses. Benefits are calculated on a percentage scale that provides higher refund percentages as income decreases. Refund is capped at $700.
The SAFESR program is geared toward helping the lowest income homeowners. It offers a 75% refund without a maximum limit, although the qualifying income level is much smaller.
The newest program is the SVR "tax freeze". This program establishes a base year when the homeowner becomes qualified, which effectively freezes the property taxes. The refund is the difference between the current property taxes and the taxes due in the base year. The refund amount is not capped.
All programs require you to have lived in Kansas and to have owned & occupied the home for the entire year of which you are seeking the property tax refund.
