The Finney County Attorney’s Office recently made a diversion fund donation to the Kansas Food Bank's Food 4 Kids program, which provides kid-friendly food for children to take home over the weekend. More than 7,100 Kansas children at 350 schools are currently served through the program.

Diversion funds come from fees paid through our diversion program and give our office an opportunity to reinvest those dollars in organizations serving our communities. This time, that means helping make sure more Kansas kids have the food they need when they’re away from school!

During his recent investiture ceremony, U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser announced an agreement with Finney County Attorney Susan Richmeier and our office to develop a Southwest Kansas task force focused on drug activity in the region.

The effort will bring federal, state and local prosecutors together to increase resources for law enforcement and prosecution in southwest Kansas, where agencies often have fewer personnel and resources to work with.

We're excited to be part of this effort and will share more as the task force takes shape!

Diversion dollars are helping care for some of Finney County’s four-legged residents. 🐾

The Finney County Attorney’s Office recently donated diversion funds to the Finney County Humane Society, where the money helps purchase special medications for sick and injured animals brought to the shelter.

These funds come from fees paid through our diversion program and give us an opportunity to put that money back into programs making a difference right here in our community. We’re happy to help the Humane Society continue caring for animals who need it most!

That’s a wrap on another summer with our interns! ⚖️

Kas, Caleb and Christopher got plenty of hands-on experience this summer, including time in the courtroom and the chance to work alongside our attorneys on real cases.

We’re grateful for the time they spent with the Finney County Attorney’s Office and everything they contributed along the way. As they head back to law school, we’re excited to see where their careers take them!

One of the most notorious multistate crime sprees of the late 1980s began right here in Garden City.

In July 1989, Barbara Kochendorfer, 27, and Mary Rains, 28, were abducted from two different convenience stores on opposite sides of the city. Both women were later found along a rural road outside of town. Between them, they left behind eight young children.

Over the next several days, similar crimes were committed in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. When Garden City native Gregg Braun was arrested in New Mexico, investigators began connecting the cases. The gun found in his possession, witness descriptions of his vehicle, shoe impressions and other evidence helped tie Braun to the killings that began here in Finney County.

Braun ultimately received four consecutive life sentences for the Kansas murders and related crimes. He was later sentenced to death in Oklahoma for another murder committed during the spree and was executed in 2000.

More than three decades later, the case remains a notable chapter in Garden City's history and an example of how evidence gathered locally can help investigators connect crimes across multiple jurisdictions.
