Threshing grain on the old Schultz farm.

Few things were more exciting, especially to children, than the arrival of a threshing machine that gobbled up sheaves at one end and at the other spewed out chaff and straw, while the grain ran into open boxes at one side. When a thresher and steam engine, billowing smoke and emitting clanging noises, came by the old East Nankin school, the three R's had to be forgotten till the sight and sound had vanished far down the country dirt road.
