🛎️ BACK 2 BACK 🛎️

It was a busy weekend for Garden City Volunteer Firefighters, as we responded to two consecutive 2-alarm fires amid the heat.

The first was located at a local business on Franklin Avenue. Garden City Fire Department Crews were on scene instantaneously upon receiving both the automatic fire alarm and a phone call for smoke coming from an outlet. Upon investigation, a fire was found in-between floors and in between businesses, which required numerous resources to ensure no further spread. GCFD and mutual aid companies had the fire under control in under 55 minutes.

As units were preparing to clear Franklin Avenue, calls started to come in for a house fire in the Mineola Volunteer Fire Department (NY) Fire District. Units from various departments, including Garden City Ladder 147, immediately began north on Franklin Avenue and worked to quickly bring it under control.

Garden City FD was also among many units that assisted in last night’s overturned gasoline tanker in the Westbury Fire Department area of Old Country Road. GCFD units assisted in containing the spill quickly, preventing further contamination. Traffic, though was diverted for approximately 12 hours following the incident to allow fire department crews, alongside the NC Fire Marshals Hazmat team, to offload the gasoline and allow for the vehicle to be safely removed from the roadway.

These were among 20 calls the GCFD responded to this weekend.

🚨 INTER-AGENCY CRASH COURSE 🚨

Recently, Garden City Volunteer Firefighters responded to multiple reports of motor vehicle accidents throughout the village. Thankfully two of our recent incidents, a car that struck the rear of a local supermarket and a car which flipped after striking a tree on Flower Rd, both resulted in only minor injuries to the drivers. These types of calls are always a joint effort between the GCFD, GCPD, and EMS personnel from NYU Langone.

In the week leading up to these incidents, an inter-agency training was held at Fire Headquarters where Fire, Police, and EMS personnel all participated in various real-world scenarios we prepare for. This type of training is crucial to the success of emergency services when responding to incidents together.

Due to wildfires in northern Canada, smoke is making its way through the village. The New York State Department of Health has issued an Air Quality Advisory. The fire department is aware of the situation and monitoring it closely.

🔥 Fire Up the Grill… Not a Fire! 🔥

🐰 Not Your Typical Rescue Call

While responding on Engine 142 to an animal rescue call on the west end, Assistant Chief Brian Gallo, Ex-Capt. Tom Rivera, and Firefighter Bill Slattery located two baby rabbits trapped in a deep window well. A quick rescue operation freed both little occupants, allowing them to safely hop back on their way.

🚨 FROM TRAINING TO REALITY 🚨

While en route to Bethpage for live fire training at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy, Garden City volunteer firefighters encountered a serious motor vehicle accident on Old Country Road in Westbury, involving an entrapped passenger.

Without hesitation, members assigned to Heavy Rescue 146 and Quint 147 immediately went to work alongside the Westbury Fire Department and EMS crews. Using our Holmatro - Rescue Tools and Extrication Equipment GC firefighters removed the passenger-side door to provide EMS personnel rapid access to the trapped victim.

Once operations at the scene were completed, our members continued on to the Fire Academy where they spent the evening conducting live burn training in high-rise fire operations.

GCFD also responded to an outside gas odor, which firefighters discovered to be a ruptured gas main at a local golf course. 🚒⛳️

🔥 From Emergency calls to training grounds — GCFD Volunteers had a busy Week 🔥

Some notable responses this week included:

▪️ A vehicle fire on Stewart Avenue
▪️ Sparking power lines next to GCHS
▪️ Trees/wires down throughout the village
▪️ As well as other weather-related hazards impacting the community, and routine alarms

This past week was a reminder that being a volunteer firefighter means always being ready — whether responding to real emergencies in the community or sharpening skills during live fire training.

Every response. Every drill. Every hour served is done by neighbors helping neighbors.

While many were celebrating Mother’s Day with their loved ones, GCFD volunteer firefighters were answering urgent calls for help.

Garden City firefighters had a busy and difficult day, among seven calls, members responded to a fatal fire in Hempstead during the early morning hours on Sunday, A rubbish fire in the evening, and later assisting at a major service station fire on Jericho Turnpike in Garden City Park, where our units were the first to arrive on scene facing heavy fire conditions.

We are grateful for the commitment of our members, who put service before self, even on holidays and important family days.

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone impacted by the Hempstead fire.
