Recently, Academy Recruits Anderson and Reid graduated from the Meridian-Nampa Joint Training Academy. These Officers were trained and tested on many aspects of law enforcement, including the Idaho Code, emergency driving, use of force, fi****ms, defensive tactics, and much more. After graduating, they were officially sworn in as Police Officers with the Garden City Police Department. They are now in the field training program and will spend several months with experienced Garden City Police Officers to learn the everyday work of being a Police Officer.

We’d like to congratulate Chief Cory Stambaugh on his recent retirement from the Garden City Police Department. Cory started his police career with the Garden City Police Department in June 1995. During his first stint with GCPD, he held the ranks of Police Officer, Detective, Sergeant, and Captain. In July 2008, he joined the Boise Police Department where he held the ranks of Police Officer, Narcotics K9 Handler, Property Crimes Detective, and Patrol Sergeant. In 2019 he reapplied to join the Garden City Police Department where he was selected as a Lieutenant. In August 2023, he was sworn in as Garden City Police Chief, taking over the department after Chief Allen’s retirement.

During Chief’s Stambaugh’s tenure, he accomplished many things. Crime remained low, morale was high, and our officers felt supported. From critical incidents to low-level radio calls, Chief Stambaugh was always willing to help when needed. He often assigned to radio calls to assist his officers and make sure they were supported. Chief Stambaugh led by example.

I would like to address a recent news article and interview in which portions of my comments were presented without the full context of my response. I was interviewed on a different topic unrelated to this and with a different reporter than who wrote this article.

During the interview, I was asked about the recent Twin Falls shooting and whether citizens should engage during an active shooter incident. While the segment that aired included only part of my answer, my complete response was more nuanced.

I stated that the citizens who intervened in the Twin Falls incident acted courageously and that their actions likely saved lives. I continue to stand by that statement. The individuals who stepped forward during a dangerous and rapidly evolving situation demonstrated tremendous bravery.

I also expressed a concern from a law enforcement perspective. When officers arrive at an active shooter scene, they are entering a chaotic and often confusing environment. One of the challenges responding officers face is quickly identifying the threat and distinguishing between the suspect, victims, witnesses, and those attempting to help. My concern was that a well-intentioned citizen who engages the threat could unintentionally be mistaken for the suspect by responding officers.

Additionally, I discussed the importance of fi****ms training, target identification, and understanding what lies beyond the intended target. Law enforcement officers train extensively in these areas because every round fired carries responsibility. I believe anyone who chooses to carry a fi***rm should understand the importance of training and situational awareness.

To be clear, it is not my place to tell citizens whether they should or should not engage during an active shooter situation. That is a deeply personal decision that must be made in the moment based on individual circumstances. My intent was not to criticize those who acted in Twin Falls. In fact, I specifically stated that I believe their actions were heroic and helped save lives.

I feel it was important to provide the full context of my comments so the public can better understand both my perspective and the concerns law enforcement officers must consider when responding to these critical incidents.

Serious Injury Traffic Collision

GARDEN CITY, IDAHO – On August 6, 2026, at approximately 9:00 PM, Garden City Police Officers responded to a motorcycle collision on Ustick Rd near the intersection of W 43rd St in Garden City. Officers arrived to the scene and located an adult male rider with serious injuries. He was treated on scene by the Boise Fire Department and Ada County Paramedics and transported by ground ambulance to a local trauma center. He is listed in serious but stable condition.

The Garden City Police Traffic Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to investigate. The preliminary investigation determined this collision involved a solo motorcycle rider who failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. After leaving the roadway, the rider rode onto the center median and struck a tree. He was not wearing a helmet. Alcohol appears to be a factor in this collision.

⚠️ E-Motorbike Safety Reminder ⚠️

Law enforcement agencies throughout the Treasure Valley have seen a significant increase in electric motorbikes being operated on public roadways, with some riders engaging in dangerous and reckless behavior.

Electric bikes and motorbikes equipped with motors exceeding 750 watts are classified as motor vehicles under Idaho law and are subject to licensing, registration, and other requirements—just like motorcycles.

Recently, a 15-year-old rider was observed performing wheelies while traveling into oncoming traffic on Glenwood Street. Thankfully, no one was injured and a serious crash was avoided.

Because of the rider’s cooperation and interaction with the officer, he was given considerable leniency and received only an infraction citation totaling more than $300. The situation could have resulted in more serious consequences, including reckless driving charges, impoundment of the e-motorbike, and additional citations.

Parents—please talk with your children about the laws and the responsibility that comes with operating these vehicles. Reckless riding puts the rider, drivers, and pedestrians at risk.
