COUNTY REQUIRES FACE COVERINGS FOR BUSINESS EMPLOYEES, CUSTOMERS

Comal County Judge Sherman Krause on Wednesday signed an order requiring all businesses in the county to develop COVID-19 safety plans that include the wearing of face coverings for all employees and customers in their establishments.

The order takes effect immediately and expires on July 15. Enforcement begins Friday.

“The alarming rise in cases across the county, from New Braunfels to Bulverde to the south side of Canyon Lake, and the stress it has put on our local health care system has made this unwelcome step necessary to protect the lives and public health of Comal County residents,” Krause said. “Face coverings and social distancing are vitally important to slowing the spread of coronavirus and protecting the most vulnerable in our community.”

Since the beginning of last week, case numbers in New Braunfels have risen from 314 to 573, while cases in Bulverde have grown from 58 to 125, and the south side of Canyon Lake has seen a spike from 15 cases to 40.

Overall, the county’s total number of confirmed and probable cases has risen from 240 on June 16 to 778 today, and the rate of tests coming back positive has more than doubled in that time, from 5.66% to 12.17%, despite an increase in testing.

Active cases have spiked from 97 on June 16 to 496 today, and hospitalizations have also increased, from six on June 16 to 35 today. Comal County today also reported its eighth death since the pandemic began.

The order is issued as part of the ongoing public health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic described in the county’s disaster declaration, issued March 18 and extended by Commissioners Court on March 24. The declaration remains in effect until rescinded by Commissioners Court.

Full text of the order is available on the county’s COVID-19 webpage, www.comalcountytx.com/covid19.

A third one-day drive-through site in Comal County on Saturday will provide a free COVID-19 test in the Bulverde/Spring Branch area to anyone who makes an appointment.

The site – set up by the Texas Division of Emergency Management and Texas Department of State Health Services in coordination with Comal County and Comal Independent School District – will be at Bill Brown Elementary School, 20410 SH-46, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Those needing a test must call 512-883-2400 or visit www.txcovidtest.org beginning Thursday morning to register and receive an appointment time. Registrations will not be accepted until 48 hours before the site opens.

“This is a great opportunity for people on the west side of the county – including Bulverde, Spring Branch and the south side of Canyon Lake – to get a free COVID-19 test if they feel they need one,” said Jeff Kelley, Comal County’s emergency management coordinator.

The site is expected to test between 50 and 60 people. Before receiving an appointment, residents will be screened for the following symptoms: fever and/or chills; cough, dry or productive; fatigue; body aches or muscle or joint pain; shortness of breath; sore throat; headache; nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; nasal congestion; or loss of taste or smell.

Previous rounds in New Braunfels and Garden Ridge returned no positive tests among Comal County residents.

The City of Garden Ridge and the Garden Ridge Lions are co-sponsoring a blood drive on June 13 from 9am to 3pm at the Garden Ridge Community and Event Center. As our South Texas communities slowly start to return to a "new normal," there's a high demand for blood as previously postponed surgeries are rescheduled. The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center estimate needing 500 donors a day to keep up with demand. The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center wouldn't ask citizens to donate blood without continuing to keep you safe during the COVID-19 health emergency.

If you wish to donate, then there will be safety guidelines followed. One of these guidelines is that donations can only be set by appointment. This allows them to control donor flow. In addition, the following safety measures will be implemented: social distancing guidelines with proper spacing at check-in areas, donor chairs, etc. Masks will be worn by employees and the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center recommends donors wear them too. They will offer masks to any donor attending.

Schedule your appointment today by clicking on the link below.
