Today we had the pleasure of meeting The Belle Of Belgrade. Lyndee created the Belle of Belgrade to bring more joy, connection and main character energy to everyday life. From one wild idea, and her deep love for Maine, connection and meaningful moments, she has built a one-of-a-kind mobile experience venue designed to help gather people, explore, celebrate, and make memories that will last long after the ride ends.
Rotarians were able to tour the bus and learn about the options available. Customers can buy a ticket on any her adventures, or they can create a group and rent the bus. Similarly, customers can choose an adventure option that Lyndee has created, or they can customize their own group adventure. There is no limit to the number of ways to create personalized events on this bus and have a lifetime of memories!
For more information, visit Lyndee's website at https://thebelleofbelgrade.com/ or follow her on social media at

Incoming President Dee Berglund and incoming Secretary Abigayle Eames held a strategic planning session at todays meeting. We broke out into groups to discuss what we feel went well in the past year and what we want more of in the year ahead. They will compile the date and bring it back for discussion at a future meeting.

It is fun to look back at our accomplishments, where we spent our time and money and then to think about our impact locally. One thing is certain, our club is growing in membership and in community.

Gardiner Rotary is excited to announce that in addition to the educational gifts we already give each year to graduating seniors, we will be giving two additional gifts in honor of two of our members, Neal A. Kelley and Jim Murphy.

A Professional Equipment Gift is named in honor of Neal Kelley.
Neal A Kelley. His family tells us that Neal attended Mt. Vernon grade school, Farmington High School. He is a graduate of the Building/Construction program at SMVT in South Portland. Was a proud member of the Maine National Guard for six years.
His first job was mowing lawns, when he was 10 years old. At one time he had 22 lawns, he would mow until it got dark, He mowing jobs in West Farmington – would pull his 18” lawnmower behind his bicycle. People would chuckle and wave.
Started his first insulation business in 1975, Central Maine Insulations (located in Mt Vernon) That business was dissolved, and he began Central Insulations, his current business company.

He purchased property in West Winthrop, which had been the home of Louies Steak House. The steak house burned. That left the property wit the burned remains and a Chalet. Neal rebuilt the property to what is today, Marshview Crossing. The building, along with the Chalet, is a commercial residential rental property. For a time, Neal and his wife Betty had an ice cream shop (Kelbee’s) which certainly caught peoples’ eye when passing by, as Neal used insulation material to construct a huge replica of the Incredible Hulk, (holding an ice cream cone) on top of the building.
Neal and Betty also had a small BVQ sauce company named Shepleys – cp-owned with Mike and Cherry Shepard.

Rotary knows that when he was 10 years old, while attending Mt. Vernon elementary school, Neal began his first business, mowing lawns, in West Farmington. At the height of his business, he had 22 lawns and would mow until dark. People chuckled and waved when they spotted him using his bicycle to pull an 18” lawnmower to job sites.
After graduating from Farmington High School, Neal traded in his lawnmower for higher education. He attended the Building/Construction program at SMVT (Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute) in South Portland. After graduation he also became a proud member of the Maine National Guard for six years.
In 1975 Neal’s next business adventure took him to Mt Vernon where he began his first insulation business, Central Maine Insulations. His current business, Central Insulations, followed.
Always restless for a new project, Neal purchased a fire damaged property, Louie’s Steak House, in West Winthrop. He turned the property into a mixed business and residential development known today as Marshview Crossing.
For a time, Neal and his wife Betty also had an ice cream shop, Kelbee’s. It caught the eye of every passerby because Neal used insulation material to construct a huge replica of the Incredible Hulk holding an ice cream cone on top of the building.
Neal and Betty also had a small BBQ sauce company named Shepley’s which they co-owned with Mike and Cherry Shepard.
Besides his professional life, Neal is devoted to his family and community. He hasn’t missed a Gardiner Rotary meeting in over 30 years.
From an 18” lawnmower and a bicycle to rebuilding damaged buildings to making great ice cream and BBQ sauce, Neal understands the vital role the right instrument plays in success. Gardiner Rotary is pleased to name its Professional Equipment Gift Award in honor of Neal Kelley.
In granting this gift, we wish to support you in your life’s endeavors and hope you find the same fidelity to community, creativity, love of family and humor that has filled Neal’s.

This Two-Year Educational Gift is named in honor of Gardiner Rotary’s 50+ year member, Jim Murphy.
Jim was born in Caribou, Maine. After high school he joined the United States Army where he experienced an enlistment that included serving in Korea.
After completing his service honorably, he entered Husson College on the GI Bill where he majored in Business Administration with a minor in Legal Finance Administration. While attending Husson, he worked at Sears Roebuck in their Credit and Collections Dept. He was also an Assistant Bank Manager for Bangor Savings.
Then he took his business degree and life experiences to the cities of Dexter and Belfast where he worked as city managers.
In 1969 he continued serving in government as Commissioner of Indian Affairs under Governor Ken Curtis. While working for Governor Curtis he assisted in forming new OJT “On the Job Training" Programs for Certified Nursing Assistant and Automotive Technician Programs. These programs were then developed for the Passamaquoddy Nation and eventually replicated by the State of Maine for High School programs.
In 1986 he formed and incorporated Murphy Appraisal Services which he ran until his retirement. But retirement didn’t entirely suit him. Jim was appointed to the Maine Optometry Board by Gov Janet Mills and has served there for the past 4 years.
He married his beloved Anne in 1958. Together they had five children and now have many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is a passionate (51 year) member of Gardiner Rotary Club and Gardiner High School Interact Club. He has great pride for these students at GHS Interact!
Naming Gardiner Rotary’s Two-Year Educational Gift after Jim reflects his ongoing passion and respect for professional programs. In granting this gift we wish to assist you in your life adventure, hoping it can be as rich and fulfilling as Jim’s.

How much better is this club for having these men as members? We are so proud of them both and excited to celebrate them in this way!

Today we had our end of year celebration of both Earlyact and Interact and what a meeting it was! The room was overflowing with happiness and positive energy. The Earlyacters shared with us the community service projects they participated in this year and that their favorite was painting the fish for the Cobbossee Watershed. To see these young children so engaged with desire to serve is beyond what you can even imagine!
The Interact group shared their community service projects and most said their favorite was the Trunk or Treat event. They were so interactive with the Earlyact kids and it was very clear that the Earlyact kids idolize the Interact students. These young adults are about to set the world on fire! They are smart, compassionate and ready to get involved. They share a commitment to making this community better for all of us. We wish the seniors so much success as they enter the next chapter of their lives and it was said, more than once, that we hope they will continue to be part of Rotary in the future.
The Interact Club gifted the Earlyact students with backpacks and you would have thought they were made out of gold. One child could not get hers on fast enough and the happiness on her face was so heartwarming. The high school students have clearly made an impact on them!
Please take a moment to scroll through the pictures for some highlights and future plan information. Join us in wishing the seniors good luck in their future and the knowledge that their community supports them! Gardiner Rotary is so proud of these young people! We also thank their parents for supporting their desire to get involved!

This Week we were joined by our very own Patricia Buck Welton, who is a Prevention Specialist who works with Healthy Communities of the Capital Area. She spoke to us about Maine Youth Thriving and Mattering Cabins, along with updating us on DFC (Drug-Free Communities) Activities. Maine Youth Thriving helps communities create positive experiences, relationships, and environments so ALL youth can thrive. Patricia partners with several organizations in helping youth feel they matter and tries to keep them from using to***co, alcohol, and other drugs. Recently Patricia purchased 3 Mattering Cabins, pictured above. One will be installed at the high school and one at the middle school. They will be filled with a variety of things for the students to take or they can leave things for others to find. ALL will be motivational.

Did you know that when surveyed, 50% the middle and high school students in this community said they feel they do not matter? How do we change that? By showing up for them. Games, plays, concerts are all ways to show up and let them know they are supported and that they DO matter. Most events are free and it really doesn't matter if you know the students. Tell them they did a good job. Get involved! These kids are the future and they need us. Many times there are events that need volunteers, so watch for that and sign up. There are endless ways to show the young people on our community that they matter. Please join us in making them know they are seen and heard!

Gardiner Rotary would like to proudly recognize the following Gardiner High School Students for being the top three seniors with the most community service!

Camden E. Genest- 1871.25 hours of service
David Scott Cotnoir- 1168.5 hours of service
Alyssa Elaine Marlowe- 1024.5 hours of service

As we all know, often times these students are also juggling grades, athletics and other extra curricular activities yet they still find time to volunteer. We think that deserves a round of applause!

These young adults are a huge part of what makes this community so great and we thank them for their selfless service.
