Pea Ridge National Military Park National Park Pea Ridge National Military Park is one of over 400 parks in the United States National Park system.

On March 7-8, 1862, over 23,000 soldiers fought here to decide the fate of Missouri which was a turning point of the war in the Trans-Mississippi. This 4,400-acre battlefield honors those who fought and died on these hallowed grounds. Weather conditions permitting, Pea Ridge National Military Park will conduct prescribed fire operations Thursday through Saturday, March 19 to 21. To assure visitor safety, some areas inside the park, including roads and trails, may be closed while fire operations are taking place and for a short period after completion.

Up to 960 acres of fields and forest will be burned to maintain and restore the historic landscape of the battlefield area and reduce available fire fuels.

Though fire managers make every effort to minimize smoke impacts to surrounding communities, smoke-sensitive individuals may want to avoid outside activities on the day(s) of the operation.

Pea Ridge National Military Park will conduct prescribed fire operations Friday through Sunday, February 20 to 22, subject to weather conditions falling within the parameters of prescribed fire prescriptions. To assure visitor safety, some areas inside the park, including roads and trails, may be closed while fire operations are taking place and for a short period after completion.

Weather conditions permitting, up to 450 acres of fields and forest will be burned to maintain and restore the historic landscape of the battlefield area. The reduction of available fire fuels and invasive plant species are additional goals of the prescribed fire operation.

Though fire managers make every effort to minimize smoke impacts to surrounding communities, smoke-sensitive individuals may want to avoid outside activities on the day(s) of the operation.

Inclement weather and closure alert:

The park will close at 5 p.m. today and will remain closed tomorrow (Saturday, January 24) due to the winter weather forecast for the area.

Update, 1/24/26 at 4:00 pm - the park will remain closed Sunday, 1/25, due to ongoing winter precipitation.

Update, 1/25 at 3:00 pm - the park will remain closed Monday, 1/26, as crews work to clear park roads and parking areas.

Update, 1/26 at 4:00 pm - the park will remain closed Tuesday, 1/27, as crews continue to clear roads, parking areas, and sidewalks.

Update, 1/27 at 4:30 pm - the park will open at 8 am Wednesday, 1/28. Please travel with caution, especially within shaded areas of park roads that have patches of ice remaining. Winter Visitor Center hours remain in effect (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays).

The park is no longer accepting applications for the 2025 Youth Conservation Corps positions. Thank you for the many outstanding applications received!

Are you 15 – 18 years old, passionate about history or the great outdoors, and looking for a summer job? Pea Ridge National Military Park is recruiting for Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) members for the 2025 season (June 2 through August 15). Crew members will assist park staff with landscaping, replacing sections of split-rail fencing, repairing buildings, providing public programs, working in the visitor center, removing invasive vegetation, and other similar tasks.

Applications will be reviewed on a weekly basis beginning April 14 and will be accepted until all positions are filled, or until May 11, whichever is sooner. To apply, please complete the form linked below and email it to [email protected] or drop off your form in a sealed envelope at the park visitor center. The positions will be full time (8 hours per day), Monday through Friday, and compensation will be $15/hour. Selected applicants aged 16-18 must successfully complete a background check prior to starting work.

Update Friday, 2/21 - the park is open. Please exercise caution when visiting, as most trails are still covered with snow.

The park is closed Tuesday, February 18, due to winter weather. Areas will re-open as soon as conditions allow. Updates will be posted here and on the park's webpage.

7:20 a.m. - Due to icy road and parking lot conditions, the park is closed and will open when conditions allow.

7:00 AM - Due to current and predicted winter weather, the park tour road is closed. It will reopen when conditions allow. Winter visitor center hours remain in effect (closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays).
