Town of Garner Social Media Comments Policy

The Town of Garner uses social media to interact with residents, businesses and visitors about public issues related to our jurisdiction. Please note that our social media properties are moderated online discussion sites and are subject to North Carolina public records laws, as well as e-discovery laws and policies. All comments and content shared on ou

r government-sponsored social media must pertain to items within the jurisdictional control or authority of our governmental unit. The Town of Garner reserves the right to delete submissions that do not meet the purpose of our social media properties as set out above. Please note this list is not intended to be all inclusive:

1) Any content or comments that do not relate to the jurisdiction or authority of the jurisdiction itself.
2) Profane or obscene language or content as determined by the profanity filters offered through each social media platform (such posts result in the comment/content being blocked through the social media’s profanity filter).
3) Content that promotes, fosters or perpetrates discrimination on the basis of race, natural hair or hairstyles, ethnicity, creed, color, s*x, pregnancy, marital or familial status, s*xual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin or ancestry, National Guard or veteran status, religious belief or non-belief, age or disability.
4) Duplicate posts by the same author (the original post will be left intact assuming it follows the guidelines of acceptable comments or content).
5) Solicitations of commerce, including content that contains gratuitous links (links or references to other relevant governmental webpages or official government sites are acceptable).
6) Promotions or content related to political organizations of any type.
7) Advocation of illegal activity; or those that compromise safety or security of the public.
8) Infringement on copyrights or trademarks.
9) Confidential or non-public information, including but not limited to any personally identifiable medical information and any content that violates the legal rights of the owner of said content. It's National Dog Day, and we're spotlighting some of the hardest-working four-legged members of the Town!

Meet the Garner Police Department's four K-9s: Barkley, Koda, Diego and Pike. These multipurpose patrol dogs serve alongside their handlers every day and play an important role in keeping our community safe.

Meet Garner Fire-Rescue Department's dog Moose. He is 12 years old and lives full time at Station #1. As a sworn member of the department, he joins firefighters at fire prevention and community engagement events throughout the community.

We appreciate Barkley, Koda, Diego, Pike and Moose for all they do to serve our community! 🐾

It's back-to-school season! Here is a good reminder of North Carolina’s school bus stop laws.

The 2026-27 school year is already underway in many North Carolina school districts, with many more welcoming students back over the next two weeks. That means the big yellow buses are back on the roads!

Leave yourself a little extra time, be patient and stay alert around school buses and bus stops.

Did you know passing a stopped school bus can result in a $500 fine and five points on your driver’s license? If a driver strikes a child, this becomes a felony.

The Garner Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating Michael Melton, age 52.

Michael was last seen on August 12, 2026, around Bryan Place and Benson Road in Garner, North Carolina. He was last seen wearing a black hat, tan hooded sweatshirt, and blue jeans, and was carrying a backpack.

Anyone with information regarding Michael Melton’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Garner Police Department at 919-772-8810.

Yesterday, Garner NC Police welcomed Officer Vanessa Jimenez to the department. Officer Jimenez was born in Chapel Hill, raised in Sanford and graduated from Appalachian State University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and completion of the BLET program. Flooding can occur during any season. Never drive or walk through flood waters. It only takes 6 inches of fast-moving water to knock over and carry away an adult, and 12 inches to carry away a car. Turn around, don’t drown!

At Tuesday's Town Council meeting, retiring Building Codes Inspections Supervisor Roy Barbour was recognized for his three decades of service to Garner.

Roy joined the Garner Inspections Department in December 1996 as a Building Inspector III and was promoted to Building Codes Inspections Supervisor in 2022. From 2018 to 2020, he served as the primary building and trades inspector during the construction of the RDU-I Amazon distribution center. Since joining the town, he has obtained four Level Three inspector certifications in building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing.

Since 1997, he has dedicated much of his time to the Greater Wake County Building Officials Association, serving in various roles, including secretary-treasurer and continuing education provider. Throughout his career, Roy also has served on many committees with the North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal, helping develop training and testing materials for North Carolina building inspectors.

In addition, he has served on the Board of Directors of the International Code Council Region 8 since 2023, which represents the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. In 2025, he was selected as the ICC Region 8 Code Official of the Year and currently serves as education chair, helping inspectors with continuing education throughout the southeast.

For many years, Roy has volunteered with the NC Apprenticeship Program, which operates under the NC Department of Commerce, serving as a judge for third- and fourth-year electrical apprentices. For the past three years, he also has volunteered with Skills USA, encouraging high school students and serving as a judge to help select the finalists who represent North Carolina at the national contest.

We sincerely thank Roy for all his years in Garner being that "ounce of prevention" that has helped keep folks safe in our town. We wish Roy the best in his retirement.
