🚧 Hancock County Secondary Roads Crew Highlight 🚧

Our Secondary Roads crew recently completed work at the Lau Wildlife Area east of the Hwy 69 and 150th Street intersection.

The project included:
• Clearing trees and brush
• Removing old barb wire fencing
• Installing a new low water crossing

The crossing was constructed using recycled county materials, including an old bridge cap, precast deck units, and broken concrete. Reusing these materials helped reduce costs while improving access to the property.

The new crossing provides better access to the north 20 acres of the 22.68-acre wildlife area for public walking access and allows Conservation staff to cross with a small pickup or ATV for maintenance activities.

Great work by our crew finding a practical and cost-effective solution while improving access to a valuable public property.

🚫 Illegal Dumping Costs Taxpayers 🚫

This is what our crews recently found in a county ditch—discarded tires left for someone else to deal with.

When items like this are dumped along our roads, county crews have to stop regular work to clean it up. That means less time spent maintaining roads and more taxpayer dollars going toward cleanup instead of improvements.

There are proper and legal ways to dispose of tires—please use them.

If you see illegal dumping, please report it to our office at 641-923-2243.

Let’s work together to keep Hancock County clean and make sure our resources are used where they belong—maintaining our roads and infrastructure.

🚧 Bridge Funding Secured in Hancock County 🚧

Hancock County has secured $1.37 million in grant funding to replace two county-owned bridges.

In addition, $1.0 million in grant funding has been awarded for replacement of the load-rated bridge on US 69 south of Garner.

These projects will improve safety, reliability, and long-term infrastructure across the county—all while leveraging outside funding to reduce the impact on local taxpayers.

Ever wonder why our new Secondary Roads shop building is so tall?

This photo shows exactly why. When our mechanics service trucks—like removing belly blades—it’s much more efficient (and safer) to work with the dump box raised. The added vertical clearance allows full access underneath without constantly repositioning equipment.

At the same time, the extra height lets us fully utilize our overhead crane system while the boxes are up, making it easier to handle heavy components and improve overall workflow in the shop.

It’s not just about space—it’s about safety, efficiency, and doing the job right. 🚧
